Linux Operating System Research Paper

Upon my research on Linux, I found that it is an operating system like Mac OS
and iOS. Linux is so popular that even Android is powered by the operating system.
Linux compromises several different pieces like bootloader, kernel, Init system,
daemons, graphical server, desktop environment, and applications. Many people
around the world have preferred to use Linux over any other operating system. It is
often come across by others using Linux that it has helped with viruses, malware, slow
downs, crashes, costly repairs, and even licensing fees. I also found in my research that
Linux has evolved into one of the most reliable computer ecosystems on the planet.
Another reason why people enjoy and prefer using Linux is because it is completely free
of charge for installing it or usage. Like other operating systems, Linux has a graphical
interface, and the same types of software you are accustomed to, such as word
processors, photo editors, video editors, and so on. Linux is different from other
operating systems because it is an open source software, which is completely
customizable.
Moreover, there is something called distribution which is basically different
versions of Linux. Each version of Linux is different depending on the type of user.
Some popular distributions that are often used are Linux Mint, Manjaro, Debian, Ubunto,
Antergos, Solus, Fedora, Elementary Os, and Opensuse. Each different distribution has
a different take on every desktop. Every distribution has different functions which can
help some people who might not be as skilled. The different distributions can also be
determined on personal preference. Someone who is not as skilled with computers
might prefer Linux newbie friendly distribution.
Many people may think that installing an operating system might be very dreadful
and time consuming. However, Linux offers one of the easiest installations of all
operating systems. Installing applications on the software are just as easy as installing
the system itself.
Linux was initially developed for personal computers based on the intel
architectures, but has then been ported to more platforms than any other operating
system. Because of the dominance of the Linux-based Android on smartphones, Linux
also has the largest installed base of all general purpose operating systems. Linux is the
leading operating system on servers. I also found that Linux also runs on embedded
systems, i.e devices whose operating system is typically built into the firmware and is
highly tailored to the system. This includes routers, automation controls, smart home
technology, televisions, automobiles, digital video recorders, video game consoles, and
even smartwatches. Linux is considered one of the most prominent examples of free
and open-source software collaboration. The source code can be used, modified and
even distributed non-commercially or commercially by anyone under the terms of its
respective licenses.
Linux was created in 1991 by Linux Torvalds while he was attending the
University of Helsinki. Torvalds was frustrated by the licensing of MINX, which at the
time limited it to educational use only, he began to work on his own operating system
kernel, which eventually became the Linux kernel. With time, Linux matured and further
Linux kernel development took place on Linux systems. GNU also replaced all MINX
components because it was advantageous to use the freely available code from GNU
Project. Torvalds initiated a switch from his original license, which prohibited commercial
redistribution.
