JACK: Well-
SOUND: U.E.F SHIP FLYING OVER THEM.
DANNY: Get down!
DANNY and JACK both get down.
JACK: U.E.F shuttle?
DANNY: Yeah, that's strange. Bit far from the town centre.
SOUND: DANNY GETTING A CALL FROM THE LOTUS SYNDICATE, THE
SOUND VIBRATING IN HIS POCKET.
DANNY: Hold on. What is it?
THE LOTUS: Have you got the target?
DANNY: What? No. Don’t rush us. You hired the best; you
expect the best. We’ll take our time and contact you when it’s
done.
The Lotus: That target means a lot to us. Bring him back
alive. No Federation interference. Understood?
DANNY: Wait no Federation contact wasn’t part of the deal,
we-
SOUND: CALL CUTTING OFF.
DANNY: Damn it. That ship is going to be a problem now.
JACK: Thats fine. We’ll just go round the back.
DANNY: No. Too risky. Set off a distraction first, we need to
get those troops away from the building. I’ll await your signal.
JACK: Alright then. I have some detonators. I’ll blow up
that shed over there you go round back.
SOUND: THE SHIP LANDING AND THE OFFICER KNOCKING ON THE DOOR.
DANNY: Jack. Wait. There might be too many. We should wait
until morning. Federation troopers are no joke. You
more than anyone should know that.
JACK: No, Danny, this is the opportunity of a lifetime.
We’ve been through worse.
DANNY: Jack-
JACK walks away, determined to get that bounty, detonators in
hand.
DANNY: If anything goes wrong, tell me. Use your comlink for
once, Jack.
JACK: Right.
SOUND: JACK JOGGING TOWARD THE SHED, PLACING THE GRENADES ON
THE SHED WALLS, THEN JOGGING BACK OUT.
SOUND: THE DETONATOR CLICKING, RADIO CHATTER FROM THE U.E.F
TROOPS, THE SHED EXPLODING. THE SHED BURNING, JACK UNHOLSTERING
HIS BLASTER, A BLASTER SHOT, AND A BODY HITTING THE FLOOR. MORE
BLASTER FIRE FROM THE TROOPS. JACK PANTING.
MUSIC: INTENSE.
SOUND: JACK SHOOTING ANOTHER TROOPER, BODY HITTING THE FLOOR.
GLASS SHATTERING FROM IN THE HOUSE.
DANNY (over comlink): Jack, I have the target lets go.
JACK: Alright, I’m on my way.
DANNY exits the house, the target in front of him, blaster to his
head.
The Officer exits the house behind, the two troops trailing
behind him.
JACK sees this happening and rushes to the house.
JACK: HEY! DANNY! BEHIND YOU!
DANNY: Wait what?
THE OFFICER: Hey there, you two. What do you think you’re
doing?
DANNY: That ain’t any of your business, son.
SOUND: THE OFFICER SCOFFING.
OFFICER: Oh, but it is. You know bounty hunting isn’t legal in
these parts. Not without a bond agent.
JACK: Wait! We have a bond agent.
OFFICER: Oh really? Prove it.
JACK: Fine.
SOUND: JACK GETTING OUT THE HOLOPAD AND DIALING A NUMBER. IT
THEN STARTS TO RING BEFORE IT ANSWERS.
DENISE: Jack? Is everything alright? Is the target secure?
JACK: Well, we got into some issues with the Federation...we
need you to prove you are our bond agent.
DENISE: Federation? No. The Lotus said no Federation contact
You need to leave until they kill you. I’m sorry.
JACK: Wait. What? Denise!
SOUND: DENISE HANGING UP.
OFFICER: Huh. I guess you do have a bond agent. But it also
seems like you have other problems on your hands so g-
SOUND: THE OFFICER REACTING TO GETTING SHOT. BODY FALLING TO
THE GROUND.
SOUND: ANOTHER BLASTER SHOT, AND A SECOND BLASTER SHOT, BOTH
TROOPER'S BODIES HITTING THE FLOOR.
TARGET: No, no! They can’t take me, they can’t!
DANNY: HEY! Where do you think you’re going?
SOUND: BLASTER SHOT, THIS TIME GOING STRAIGHT THROUGH DANNY,
HIS BODY FALLS TO THE FLOOR.
JACK: NO! DANNY!
DANNY (DYING): Top left window...
SOUND: JACK SHOOTING HIS BLASTER TOWARD THE SHOOTER, KILLING HIM.
JACK: Danny? No, no, no! DANNY! I got him Dan! I-
DANNY (DYING): Hey. Jack.
JACK: Yeah?
DANNY(DYING): Just- don’t do anything stupid.
JACK: I- wait-no! Danny! Wake up! No, no, no, no... DANNY!
ACT 2 SCENE 3:
INT: THE VIPER, NIGHT, VUDIM
SOUND: RAIN HITTING THE VIPERS HULL. A KNOCK IS HEARD ON THE
SHIPS HULL. THE DOOR OPENS.
DENISE: Jack?
JACK: Go away Denise.
DENISE: Jack, you know I can’t do that.
JACK: What was the point? I killed so many to avenge
just one person.
DENISE: Danny was your friend. Its normal to feel this
way.
JACK: Is it? I can’t even sleep without seeing his
face! Implanted in my brain like some parasite! And
when I look at my hands. All I see is the blood on
them. His blood, Denise. It’s all my fault. I-I more
than anyone else should know how dangerous The
Federation is, yet, I still went for it. I got him
killed and then tons more killed trying to avenge
him.
DENISE: This doesn’t make you a bad person, Jack.
JACK (angry): Really? You think so? I’m pretty sure I am,
Denise.
DENISE: No Jack, you’re just broken.
SOUND: JACK BEGINS TO SOB.
JACK: No! Broken?? No- A person can’t just be broken
that’s just not-
JACK: *SOBS* that’s just not how it works.
DENISE: Sorry to tell you, but that is totally how it
works, Jack. Look, do you want to come inside?
I’ll get you a drink or something.
JACK: Yeah. Yeah! I could use a drink I guess.
DENISE: Yeah! Thats the spirit. I’ll get you something
nice. Whiskey, perhaps?
SOUND: JACK SITS UP AND WALKS OUTSIDE, DENISE WALKING WITH HIM.
JACK: That was his favorite.
DENISE: Oh, don’t be a negative Nancy. Lighten up a
little. Did he ever give you whiskey?
JACK: Yeah.
DENISE: Did you like it?
JACK: I guess.
DENISE: There we go then! I’ll get you some whiskey.
SOUND: A LOUD BEEP AS DENISE SCANS HER CARD TO GET INTO HER
HOUSE. THE DOOR OPENS. THEY WALK INSIDE, AND DENISE OPENS UP A
CUPBOARD, GETS OUT A GLASS AND POURS OUT SOME WHISKEY.
DENISE: You want ice?
JACK: I’m good.
DENISE: Alright then.
SOUND: DENISE PLACES THE GLASS ON THE TABLE.
DENISE: Uh- how have you been?
JACK: Horrible.
DENISE: Right, right.
SOUND: JACK TAKES A SIP OF THE WHISKEY, AND PLACES IT BACK DOWN
ON THE TABLE.
JACK: Am I a bad person, Denise?
DENISE: No, Jack.
SOUND: JACK TAKES ANOTHER SIP OF WHISKEY. HE WINCES.
JACK: 17 years. I left my daughter and my girlfriend.
She gave birth to my daughter, and I panicked, and
I left. *BEGINS TO SOB AGAIN* I missed so much of
her life, Denise. Shes almost an adult.
DENISE: Jack. That doesn’t make you bad. One bad act
doesn’t define an entire person.
JACK: I guess.
SOUND: JACK SITS UP.
JACK: *SHOUTS ANGRILY* I SAID I WANTED ICE!
DENISE: No, you didn’t Jack I-
JACK: I just dealt with my best friend dying, and you
do this to me!
DENISE: Jack, please, stop, you didn’t ask for ice-
JACK: *SHOUTS ANGRILY AGAIN* STOP!
DENISE: Stop what?
JACK: JUST. *DEEP BREATH* I’m sorry Denise, that wasn’t
me, I’m sorry, I’m gonna leave.
DENISE: Jack...
JACK: No, Denise. I’m sorry. You don’t understand.
DENISE: What? I don’t understand. Seriously? Everyone has
their own story, Jack. You think you’re the only
one who struggles to sleep at night? Who has
regrets? So
don’t give me this “I’m a bad person” crap. Cos
I’ve been there, done that. And look at me now,
Jack.
JACK: Wait Denise… That’s not what I meant-
DENISE: *TAKES A DEEP BREATH* Go.
JACK: Ok. I’m sorry.
SOUND: JACK BEGINS TO LEAVE.
JACK: Wait, Denise. How did you do it?
DENISE: Do what?
JACK: *SIGHS* Get better.
DENISE: I didn’t, Jack. I drank my heart out. Almost flew
into the Sun a couple times.
JACK: *SIGHS* I- I'm sorry. I really am. Can I take those
flowers?
DENISE: I don’t really care to be honest, Jack. Not those
ones though, the other ones there will do.
JACK: Right. Thank you.
DENISE: Mhm. I can see what you’re doing, Jack.
SOUND: JACK GRABBING THE FLOWERS AND OPENING THE DOOR.
JACK: Right.
DENISE: Just go. Do what you need to do. Safe travels.
JACK: Thanks, Denise. I’m sorry.
DENISE: Whatever, Jack. Don’t bother coming back.
JACK: Right.
SOUND: JACK CLOSES THE DOOR.
ACT 3 SCENE 1:
EXT: PLANET, TARIDDIA. EVENING.
SOUND: JACK STEPS OFF THE SHIP, TAKES A DEEP BREATH AND WALKS
ONTO THE PAVEMENT, HAILING A TAXI. THE TAXI PULLS UP.
TAXI DRIVER: Where to, kid?
SOUND: JACK OPENS THE DOOR AND ENTERS THE TAXI.
JACK: Number 19 Apartment Complex 2467.
TAXI DRIVER: Alright.
SOUND: THE TAXI DRIVING AFTER A COUPLE SECONDS, THE TAXI DRIVER
TALKS.
TAXI DRIVER: Look at that, to your left. Looters. Horrible, isn’t
it? I blame the new Chancellor. The Federation is losing its
grip. I tell you what.
JACK: Yeah.
TAXI DRIVER: Actually, you hear what happened on Ediu the other
day?
JACK: No.
TAXI DRIVER: Another rebellion! They marched to the palace and
killed the Senator of the System there. It’s nuts.
There was one at the Centauri system too. It
wasn’t long ago either. Thats only a couple
light years from the capital system. It’s all
falling apart.
JACK: About time.
TAXI DRIVER: *LAUGHS* Right? Screw those pigs. They took my
kids, you know. In the Massacre of Sun-Dun.
Horrible it was, I lost my leg that day, too,
just to rub salt on the wound.
JACK: That...sucks.
TAXI DRIVER: It really does. But life keeps chugging. And I
ain’t gonna stop dancing until those curtains fall.
Anyway, here’s your stop. *CHUCKLES* I see the
flowers. Good luck, kid.
SOUND: JACK OPENING THE DOOR AND EXITING THE TAXI, THEN CLOSES
THE DOOR.
JACK: Thanks. And good luck to you.
TAXI DRIVER: *LAUGHS* Thanks kid!
SOUND: TAXI DRIVING OFF. JACK WALKS OVER TO THE DOOR TO THE
APARTMENT AND KNOCKS. A PAUSE. HE KNOCKS AGAIN. THE DOOR OPENS.
CAROLYN: Woah. Jack. I-
JACK: Carolyn! I got flowers.
CAROLYN: You did.
JACK: Yeah...
CAROLYN: I-
JACK: What is it?
CAROLYN: I’m sorry. It’s been so long, I thought you were
dead.
JACK: Yeah, sorry about that.
CAROLYN: You know, it made it easier.
JACK: What?
CAROLYN: Thinking you were dead.
JACK: Oh. Wow. I-I'm sorry.
CAROLYN: Sorry? Sorry isn’t going to regain the 17 years
you missed, Jack. You missed so much of her life.
She’s almost an adult, Jack.
JACK: I-How is-uh-
CAROLYN: Oh, that's right, you never got to name her. Its
*DISTORTED SOUND EFFECT* By the way.
JACK: Wait. What did you say?
SOUND: A DISTORTING EFFECT.
JACK: What was that?
CAROLYN: What are you talking about? Are you insane? You
left your daughter. YOU LEFT ME!
JACK: I know! I’m sorry, Carolyn! Please! I’M SORRY!
SOUND: DISTANT PHONE RINGING
JACK: What was-?
CAROLYN: What's what, Jack? You regretting anything?
JACK: No? I mean yes- but I-
CAROLYN: You regret leaving me, or the fact you never came
back?
JACK: What?
CAROLYN: You never came back, Jack.
JACK: What are you talking about? NO! THAT’S NOT TRUE!
I CAME BACK I DID- I WOULDN’T-
SOUND: THE DISTORTATION EFFECT GETS LOUDER AND LOUDER UNTIL IT
FADES OUT, THE PHONE VIBRATING GETTING LOUDER, AND A SHIP ALARM
REPLACING IT.
DENISE: Jack? Jack!
JACK: Where am I? Denise? Oh-woah-
DENISE: JACK!?
JACK: What's going on? Why am I staring into the Sun?
Wait. No. NOOO! Carolyn! I need to go to Carolyn-
COMPUTER: Hull integrity 25%.
DENISE: Jack, I-
JACK: I-I can’t.
DENISE: Jack-
JACK: I’m scared, Denise. What do I do?
DENISE: Whatever you want Jack. You gonna fly into it or
are you gonna suck it up?
JACK: *THE HEAT IS GETTING A BIT MUCH, FOR JACK* No- I-
Carolyn-
DENISE: It's a harsh galaxy, Jack. I was an Icarus just
like you. Stared down the Sun, the heat
blistering my face. But I didn’t. Now it’s
your turn. Will you?
JACK: I don’t know. I’m afraid, Denise.
DENISE: I’m not here to babysit you.
COMPUTER: Hull integrity 10%
JACK: I-I can’t do it. I want to. Danny’s voice rings
in my head like the plague, it's horrible
Denise, it’s torture.
DENISE: The voices will get quieter eventually. Give it
time, Jack. Whatever you do, I can’t be there
with you for it. I’m so sorry. I want to move on
from all this. Safe travels though. Goodbye,
Jack.
SOUND: DENISE HANGS UP.
JACK: *sighs*
DANNY: Well?
JACK: I don’t know, man.
DANNY: It wasn’t your fault, you know.
JACK: *sighs*
DANNY: I wouldn’t want this for you.
JACK: I know.
DANNY: You remember my last words to you?
JACK: “Don’t do anything stupid” yeah, I know.
DANNY: And what are you doing right now, Jack?
JACK: *chuckles* Something stupid.
DANNY: Move on Jack. Make your own story. Without me.
Without Carolyn. You’d make a good farmer, you
know.
JACK: *JOKINGLY* Shut up…
DANNY: Just do whatever you want. Without me of course.
Your daughter would be happier for it.
JACK: Would she?
DANNY: She would. You killed.
JACK: Right.
DANNY: Just don’t do anything stupid, Jack. Okay?
JACK: Yeah. *DEEP BREATH*
SOUND: SHIP POWERING UP, THE ENGINES ROARING TO LIFE.
NARRATOR: 2 years has passed since Danny’s death.
Scrapped The Viper. Well, I didn’t scrap it,
I just put it in storage. I know it meant a
lot to him but, I just couldn’t fly it
anymore. It was too painful to fly without him
there. Instead I've been taking star cruisers
if I need to go off world. And you know what?
Danny used to say, if he could go back in time, he
would go back to his days as a farmer with his
father. And I can see why. Its peaceful out here. No
blasters, no rioters, no death. *SIGHS* I miss him.
To be fair, I do miss him. I mean, who wouldn’t?
Sometimes stuff just doesn’t go to plan, I guess.
The whole experience taught me something. He always
said, life’s a bitch and then you die. But sometimes
life’s a bitch and you keep living. And then you just
have to suck it up. Life isn’t easy, you’re going to
lose someone you love, that’s just reality. Its how
you deal with that that matters. You either keep going or
you don’t. In this galaxy, no one cares. But there's
people who will. Now that sounds silly and all, but
its true. You’ll become lost; I know I did. Grief
is a horrible thing but it’s a normal part of life. I’m not
saying all this because I’m perfect and I
moved on easily, because I’m not. And I didn’t. I
still don’t know how Carolyn is. Maybe one day I’ll
go to her and my daughter. God, I wish I knew her name. You
know, I looked at that Sun 3 other times after that
day. I can’t sleep somedays because Danny’s dead body
haunts my dreams. I still see his blood on my hands. But
I guess that’s life. Now I’m just a wanderer. Wandering the
galaxy, going where life takes me. And you know what? I’m
cool with that. End Log.
END.
Denise Audition 2
-Used. I believe it hits the perfect balance of soft and serious.
Not too soft like the first one, but not too serious that you might
as well be auditioning for Batman. It fits my production, and the
idea I had in mind for the character of Denise, and the role she
plays in the story. The voice also projects quite well, the person
who auditioned is obviously quite experienced, which helped the
quality of my production.
Danny Audition 1
-Didn’t use. Too generic and not grizzly enough. Danny is an
older, more experienced type of bounty hunter than Jack. This
does not show in this audition unfortunately.
Danny Audition 2
-Used. So much better. Obviously, the guy who submitted this is
a professional, and he is as it says on his profile. His voice is
perfectly grizzly, hitting the idea I had for Danny almost
perfectly. It’s how I imagined he would sound like. He sounds
experienced, like there is history in that voice, and I loved that.
He also did 3 takes for each line, so bonus points to the actor.
Jack Audition 1
-Didn’t use. Too energetic. Wouldn’t be serious enough for
when it got serious towards the end.
Jack Audition 2
-Used. It wasn’t as energetic as the last one, and it fit perfectly
with the character. Cocky at the start, and toward the end, more
serious, which I felt this audition hit both perfectly.
