FADE IN:

1 EXT. SUBURBAN HOME - EVENING 1

The sun is setting. Two lights are illuminated in the house.


One is upstairs [Top left] and one is downstairs [Bottom right]
We see figures in each window, one of a family eating dinner and
the other a single figure at a desk.

CUT TO:

2 INT. SUBURBAN HOME - DINNER TABLE 2

A family of three sits around the table, laughing. The tone


is light. MOTHER (40) scoops mashed potatoes onto her plate.

YOUNGER SISTER (11)


(looking at father)
Can you pass the broccoli?

FATHER (41) passes the broccoli as we transition to an


office

CUT TO:

3 INT. OFFICE - DESK 3

Ruby (15) sits at the desk, leaning on her hand. We push in


closer to her and focus on the computer in front of her.

RUBY’S POV
Ruby stares at the computer screen. Its bright light stands
out from the background. Her vision goes in and out of focus as
she stares at the mostly blank google doc.

FLASHBACK OSV: MOTHER


I just don’t understand what her problem
is. She’s been so distant, and lazy recently.
She’s doing awful in her classes. I think
she just needs to put in more effort.
There’s a knock at the door. We pan over left to reveal
Ruby’s mother entering the room. Ruby sits up straight and
switches tabs on her laptop. She swivels her chair around

RUBY
What’s up mom?

MOTHER
Hey, why don’t you come and join
us at dinner? And then afterward I can
help you work on that essay. Don’t worry
about it right now, I know it can be
difficult to focus sometimes.

Ruby smiles and stands up. She and her mother begin walking out
the door.
RUBY
Okay. What’s for dinner?

MOTHER
(Slightly muffled from the hallway)
Meatloaf and potatoes. Your favorite.
How have you been feeling recently?
Why don’t we talk about getting you
that therapist you asked for while we eat?
