INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING
Group Assignment (50%)

Intake: APU1F2311CS(AI) APD1F2311CS(AI) APU1F2311CS(DF) APD1F2311CS(DF)

Hand Out Date: Week 3

Due Date – Team Work: Week 13 (08th of March 2024)- Word Count Limit: 4000
Lecturer: Mr. Shahab Alizadeh / Dr. Kamalakannan Machap /Mr. David Tan

The objective of this assignment is to enable students to utilize fundamental principles of wired
network, as well as the Cisco Packet Tracer simulation tool, in order to design and set up a LAN
and WAN topology. Furthermore, students should be capable of developing their own IP addressing
scheme, employing subnetting to divide their network, and configuring network devices like routers
and switches.

1.Assessed Learning Outcomes:

CLO2: Apply suitable topology, IP addressing scheme and configuration techniques in a
network design based on the given scenario (C3, PLO2)
CLO3: Present network design and configuration using simulation tool (A2, PLO5)

Note: PLO2 –Cognitive Skills. PLO5 – Communication Skills.

2.Scenario:
A growing start-up company, MapleTech, with offices based in the KL, Penang, Ipoh and
Melacca, would like to connect its 4 offices together via a common network platform and
implement different improvements, such as reliable network connectivity and security, to the
Local Area Networks. The company has approached APU for advice and help. Based on the
requirements, APU has recommended using the expertise of its students to develop a
networking solution and to conduct necessary network implementation/configurations. In
addition to the documentation that captures the process of design and implementation, a
justification for the proposed solution will help the company to understand better for its needs
and help achieving the long-term business goals.

For the network design assignment, it is required that you propose a network topology that is
suitable for LAN and WAN. The topology should include adequate routers and switches that
can provide connectivity to end devices and other remote networks via appropriate
communication media.

To ensure optimal routing, routers and switches should be configured properly with the use of
static routing protocols. This will help to ensure that packets are always routed correctly to their
intended destinations.

Your proposed network should also support Internet of Things (IoT) devices that are used to
automate and monitor various aspects of your business, such as temperature, lighting, and
security. These devices should be connected to the network using wired connections.

Additionally, it is recommended that you allocate separate server rooms for different services
such as web servers, file servers, domain name servers, DHCP servers, and email servers at
different branches.

Your research should include :

 Logical topology Design
 Justification of the Topology
 IP Addressing scheme
 Justification of the configuration techniques for different network devices

The findings and outcome of your research should be arranged in a proper flow to be presented to
the Technical team who are involved in the full design of the network. In addition, prepare a Cisco
Packet Tracer diagram as a proof of concept for your research work.

3.Important Instructions for online submission:

1. The group assignment should be completed in a group of not more than 4 members. The
group documentation and packet tracer file must be submitted by the group leader.
2. Select a group leader among the members for the group assignment.
3. All submissions should be done in Moodle.
4. Double-check the work before online submission and make sure packet tracer and submitted
document are not corrupted.

1. The assignment should attach the front cover, and table of contents and attach the completed
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) must be digitally signed and agreed upon by all group
members.
2. You are required to build a complete computer network environment for the scenario,
supported by good research work.
3. Provide configuration of the logical network diagram using Cisco Packet Tracer. Submit the
configuration file in Moodle.
4. Your report must be typed using Microsoft Word with Times New Roman font size 12. The
report should be in 1.5 spacing.
5. The report has to be well presented and should be typed. Submission of reports that are
unprofessional in it’s outlook will not fare well when marks are allocated.
