Concept:

Smart Homes are homes which are powered by computing devices and information
technology that connect various gadgets and instruments in the house to provide enhanced
comfort, convenience, security, and entertainment to residents in a sustainable way. Once
hailed as the domain of the super-rich, today most customers seek Smart Homes in some
form or the other. The availability of a wide range of high technology products aimed at
making life more secure, convenient and comfortable are steadily drawing more and more
customers to the concept.

Awareness of specific features under Smart Homes

When customers speak about specific features under Smart Homes, they primarily talk
about security features. However, they also talk about other features.

Features that customers are aware of in these specific categories are:

• Security features – Video (IP) door, Gas leakage, Motion sensors, Dome speaker / Mike.
 Few mentions of Curtain sensors, Intrusion sensors and Fire control features
• Lighting controls – Switching lights from remote control
• Entertainment – AV controls. Few mentions of content sharing & information feed
• Electrical controls – AC controls. Few mentions of Smart gadgets
• Communication tools- Communication with front door and main gate

What’s in it for customer?

When talking about Smart Homes, customers mostly talk about security features, digital
security, secured homes etc. However, apart from security, customers also talk about
convenience related benefits of Smart Homes. As mentioned by a customer in Mumbai, “It
reduces my work, it is convenient to use, if I forgot something means also it will switch off
automatically”.
Apart from convenience, many customers talk about energy efficiency that Smart Homes
can bring about by saving wasteful energy expenditure.

As mentioned by a few customers in this study,

 “It reduces energy and is convenient”.
 “Home is secure; power can be saved like I said and also comfort that it gives”.
 “It saves the power.”

The top motivators driving acceptance of Smart Homes, are:

1) Security
2) Convenience
3) Energy Efficiency
What are customer expectations from Smart Homes?
As security is the key motivation driving the acceptance of Smart Homes, security features
are hygiene to Smart Homes. Customers expect all features which will aid in making their
homes more secure. Non delivery on this parameter will make a solution unacceptable to
them.
All electrical controls like AC controls, Smart gadgets and UPS controls are ‘desire’ factors.
Non delivery on this will make them dissatisfied with the solution and delivery on this will
add to overall satisfaction.
All entertainment controls like AV control, content sharing, content and demand are not
really expected by customers and delivery of these features will delight and are therefore
‘delight’ factors. Similarly customers are not expecting any on-campus or off-campus
services and information feed and would therefore be delighted to get these facilities

Smart Home System
Smart Home System concept:-

Smart Home System will allow you to access your home from wherever you are and
whenever you want. It will give your home the ability to fully adapt to its environment,
letting you to be in full command of its functioning, wherever you are. It will allow you to
control your home appliances while on the move with your smartphone.

How It will Work:

The Smart Home System will consist of three main components:

1. Master Controller

2. Switchboard Modules

3. Mobile App

The Master Controller is the main component of the System. It is the brain of the System
which will control the other modules. The Switchboard Modules will sit behind your
switchboards and the mobile app will provide interface to control all your devices. A single
master controller can control multiple switchboard modules.

The Smart Home System will be a wireless System and will be highly adaptable to other
wireless communication protocol in future like zigbee and z-ware technology. In the first
phase it will be designed to work on Wi-Fi and other necessary protocols to meet phase 1
development, without the hassles of interference and multiple wiring. The Device can be
configured with your existing Wi-fi router. The System will be designed to work locally
without internet, allowing you to control your devices, via local communication, even when
there is no internet connection available.

The System will be developed to be user friendly and easy to install, hence will be able work
on internet without the need of static ip and configuration. The System will be designed to
turn appliances and electronics on/off as well as control all available features of the device,
and schedule the same from anywhere across the house, or from any part of the world
remotely. The System will be able to measure the energy consumption of the respective
switchboard, allowing you to control its usage and identify if it is inefficient. The System will
allow to program switches or appliances to turn on/off at a specific time using a timer
functionality with the help of your Smart Device (Smart Phone, Smart Panel, Laptop and PC)

The System will be hosted on the cloud for storing all the relevant data w.r.t energy usage of
the home appliances. The user will be able to get report from the cloud server which will
store all the important events triggered by the master controller through mobile app. Please
check the overall System diagram of the Smart Home System below.
