One of the toughest challenges I faced as a maintenance engineer was when one of our
production lines experienced a persistent issue with the SAP feeding machine. This problem
was intermittent, meaning it appeared for a few hours and then the machine would function
normally again. During one of my night shifts, my co-worker and I decided to approach the
problem differently deviating from the ordinary procedure (instead of inspecting the motor’s
drive and checking the controller’s parameter and reseting the machine) ,.
I asked the question of what could cause the motor to speed up and shift from the set point.
The answer was the scale because the feeder operated in gravimetric mode, meaning any
disturbance to the scale could cause an error in the entire feeder system. After conducting a
thorough inspection of the scale, we discovered a screw that was stuck underneath the
scale's platform. Once we corrected the issue, the machine resumed normal operation.
This particular challenge highlighted the importance of critical thinking and attention to
detail in problem-solving. It taught us the significance of considering unconventional causes
and thoroughly inspecting all components. By approaching the problem differently, we were
able to identify and rectify the root cause, ultimately restoring the machine's functionality.
In summary, this experience demonstrated the value of thinking outside the box and paying
attention to minute details in resolving complex maintenance issues.
