STUDENT PLACEMENT DESCRIPTION

Shifra Homes mission is to provide a safe haven and an empowering environment that promotes
dignity and a sense of hope for young, pregnant women and young mothers experiencing
homelessness. We aim to provide support and resources with the goal of protecting and nurturing
new life. Working with the Program Manager/ Program Director, students will provide daily support
and programming to young pregnant women/ mothers and their babies. This is an in-person
placement and is suitable for women only.

TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, PLEASE:

The student is to consider herself as a “Developing Professional” in their placement. We provide


various hands-on experiences for our students, along with responsibilities and roles that they may
take on:
• One-on-one client interactions
• Group facilitation and co-facilitation (i.e. residents, volunteers, other working professionals)
• Community outreach and building professional relationships with community service
providers
• Documentation (i.e. intakes, personal growth plans, needs assessment, etc.)
• Researching resources (i.e. education pathways, housing options, daycare options, etc.)
• Life skills (i.e. cooking, cleaning, budgeting, etc.)
• Opportunities to create informative and educational materials
• Therapeutic programming (observe, assist, facilitate) and collaboration with other
professionals
• Assist in health and safety checks, room inspections, overall functioning and upkeep of the
homes
• And many other opportunities catered to student goals!

One-on-One Client Contact

We allow the students to interact with residents of Shifra Homes to foster the critical client-based
skills such as engagement, assessment, intervention, and support.

Group Facilitation

We allow students to observe, assist and/or facilitate client/staff//volunteer groups within the
Homes.

Administrative Tasks

We have the students become familiarized with the Home's documentation such as intake and
assessment forms, case notes, client applications, and numerous other administrative tasks.

Community Development, Outreach or Special Projects

We enable students to make contact on behalf of our Home with partner agencies in the
surrounding community. The student might also be assigned a special project in the form of a
research project, program/policy development or fundraising initiative. We encourage students to
make informational boards about Shifra Home's programs to display within the community. We also
have students conduct research about organizations, resources, and services in the community to
add to our ever-growing Resource Binders.

Volunteer Management

We allow students to work in collaboration with volunteers to complete assigned tasks.

Needs Assessment

We allow students to create, distribute or conduct surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, etc. to
determine felt, expressed, normative and comparative needs of the residents and Shifra Homes.

Intake, Discharge

We allow students to observe or complete resident Intakes, Case Notes, Personal Growth Plans,
and Discharges under Program Director/Manager supervision.
Public Relations/Social Marketing

We allow students to assist with development of brochures, newsletters, posters, and display
boards.

Program Planning, Facilitation, and Evaluation

We allow students to suggest, assist with, and implement programs for residents, upon
confirmation by the Program Director/ Manager. We also encourage students to create informative
and educational materials to distribute to residents. Topics include but are not limited to
pregnancy, prenatal care, nutrition, Shifra Homes, community programs, etc.

Additional Opportunities

We also allow and encourage students to experience, practice, and participate in Case
Management, Advocacy, and Mediation/Conflict Resolution throughout their placement.
