Development of New API Standards on Lifting

API Recommended Practices 2CIM & 2D-3

Overview
• API Recommended Practice 2CIM - Integrity Management of Offshore
Pedestal-mounted Cranes

• API Recommended Practice 2D-3 – Alternative Lifting Devices

2022 API OFFSHORE SAFE LIFTING CONFERENCE & EXPO

API RP 2CIM - Integrity Management of Offshore
Pedestal-mounted Cranes
Scope

• To evaluate the structure and equipment of offshore cranes for

continued use after the cranes reached or are nearing their theoretical
design life of 30+ years.

• This evaluation requires a more detailed inspection and verification of

the design requirements than what is shown within the scope of API
Specification 2C and API RP 2D.

API RP 2CIM - Integrity Management of Offshore
Pedestal-mounted Cranes
Why do we need this document?

• A properly engineered Structural Integrity Management (SIM) strategy

will create understanding and management of the structural risk;
reducing overall risk to life, safety, and the environment.

API RP 2CIM - Integrity Management of Offshore
Pedestal-mounted Cranes
Why do we need this document?

• With no guidelines currently in place, the crane owners are hard pressed
to find a solution to this growing issue.

• The plans that have been created are only partially addressing the
potential concerns, with no two plans being consistent.

2022 API OFFSHORE SAFE LIFTING CONFERENCE & EXPO

API RP 2D-3 – Alternative Lifting Devices
Scope

• To include alternative lifting devices such as hoists, tuggers, davits, etc.

• To include the proper care, inspection, and maintenance on these types of items as
they are not included in API RP 2D as it only applies to offshore pedestal cranes.

• There is no API document that currently has information on these types of devices.

API RP 2D-3 – Alternative Lifting Devices
Why do we need this document?

• Currently there is no document regarding offshore equipment to

reference.

• The industry reverts to self-imposed procedures utilizing what

recommendations they may find.

2022 API OFFSHORE SAFE LIFTING CONFERENCE & EXPO

API RP 2D-3 – Alternative Lifting Devices
Why do we need this document?

• The document will include proper inspections, maintenance, and

procedures to follow to ensure safe operations.

• The Notices to Lessees and Operators from BSEE explains the need for
this type of document (NTL No. 2019-N05).

2022 API OFFSHORE SAFE LIFTING CONFERENCE & EXPO

API RP 2D-3 – Alternative Lifting Devices
Why do we need this document?

• Operators, Drillers, and Government Agencies have all requested this

document be created for clarity on these types of pieces of equipment.

• There is a void in API regarding alternative lifting devices and a standard

needs to be in place on the minimum requirements to be followed to
safely operate, inspect, and maintain these types of equipment.
