Speed, Distance & Time

Practice questions
Practice questions
1) A 150 meter long train takes 5 seconds to cross an
electric pole besides the track. What is the speed of
the train ?
Speed = Distance / Time
= 150/5
=30 m/s = 108 km/h
Practice questions
2) A 220 meter long train runnig at a speed of 72 km/h
will take ____ seconds to cross an electric pole
besides the track.
Time = Distance / Speed
= 220/20
=11 seconds
Practice questions
3) A train takes 5 seconds to cross an electric pole
besides the track. If its speed is 126 km/h, What is
the length of the train ?
Distance = Speed x Time
= 35 x 5
=175 metres
Practice questions
4) A 150 meter long train takes 10 seconds to cross a
bridge of length 250 metres. What is the speed of
the train ?
Speed = Distance / Time
= 400/10
=40 m/s = 144 km/h
5) A 150 meter long train takes 15 seconds to cross a
platform. If the speed of the train is 60km/h, what is
the length of the platform ?
Distance = Speed x Time
= 50/3 x 15
=250 meters
ie., Total length of the train and the platform = 250 meters
Therefore length of the platform = 100 meters
6) Two trains of equal length running in opposite
directions in parallel tracks, takes 6 seconds to cross
each other. If the speeds of the trains is 60km/h and
66 km/h, what is the length of each of the trains?
Distance = Speed x time
= 35 x 6
=210 meters
ie., Total length of the two trains = 210 meters
Therefore length of each of the trains = 105 meters
7) Two trains of equal length running in same directions
in parallel tracks, takes 24 seconds to cross a each
other. If the speeds of the trains is 60km/h and 90
km/h, what is the length of each of the trains?
Distance = Speed x time
= 25/3 x 24
=200 meters
ie., Total length of the two trains = 200 meters
Therefore length of each of the trains = 100 meters
8) A 150 meter long train takes 5 seconds to cross a
cyclist who is riding at a speed of 20 kmph in the
opposite direction to that of the train. The speed of
the train is ____
Speed = Distance / Time
= 150/5
= 30 m/s = 108 km/h
ie., Total speed of the train and the cyclist = 108 km/h
Therefore the speed of the trains = 88 km/h
9) A 120 meter long train takes 8 seconds to cross a
tunnel of same length. If the speed of the train is
reduced by 50%, the time taken to cross a platform
of double the length of the tunnel will be ____
Time = Distance / Speed
= 360/15
= 24 seconds
10) Two trains running in parallel same direction. Their
lengths are 142m and 158m. The faster train takes 10
seconds to cross the slower train. If the speed of the
slower train is 72 km/h, what is the speed of the faster
train?
Speed = Distance / Time
= 300/10
= 30 m/s = 108 km/h
ie., Difference in speed of the two trains = S1 – S2 = 108km/h
ie., S1 – 72 = 108
Therefore the speed of the faster train = 108+72 = 144 km/h
