Chapter 4: Air
Answer these questions:
Q.1. What is the percentage of oxygen in the air? Ans: Air contains 21% oxygen. Q.2. Which layer of the atmosphere protects the Earth from ultraviolet rays? Ans: Ozone layer protects the earth from ultraviolet rays. Q.3. Define pollution. Ans: An addition of substances to the environment in quantities which are harmful for living beings is called pollution. Q.4. Which gas is used to prepare fertilizers? Ans: Nitrogen gas is used to prepare fertilizers. Q.5. Which is the top most layer of the atmosphere? Ans: Exosphere is the uppermost layer of the atmosphere. Q.6. Write the main causes of air pollution. Ans: Air pollution is mainly caused by the burning of fuels, gaseous wastes from industries, volcanic eruptions and forest fires. Q.7. What are the main effects of air pollution? Ans: The polluted air causes difficulty in breathing, lung diseases like asthma, lung cancer and eye conjunctivitis. It also harms the crops, buildings and monuments. Q.8. How is the level of oxygen maintained in air? Ans: Plants maintain the balance of oxygen in the air. In photosynthesis plants make their own food and oxygen is released during the process. Plants also consume oxygen for respiration but they produce more of it then they consume. Q.9. Explain the different layers of air. Ans: The blanket of air called atmosphere, is divided into 5 major layers. 1. The troposphere is the lower most layer of the atmosphere. The formation of clouds and weather changes takes place in this layer. 2. The stratosphere is the second layer from the earth. Aeroplanes and weather balloons fly in this layer. Ozone layer is also a part of stratosphere. 3. The mesosphere is the third layer of the atmosphere .It is the coldest layer. The meteors burn in this layer. 4. The thermosphere is the fourth layer from the earth. The satellite moves in orbits in this layer. 5. The exosphere is the uppermost layer of the atmosphere and it leads to open space. Q.10. Explain the composition of air. Ans: air is a mixture of many gases. Air mainly contains about 78% of nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, about 0.9% argon and the other noble gases ,0.03% carbon dioxide, traces of some other gases along with different quantity of water vapours. OBJECTIVES: Q.11. FILL IN THE BLANKS: 1. Air is present all around us but it is not visible to us. 2. 99% of the air is present up to the height of 30 km only. 3. When air moves it is called wind. 4. When air move slowly it is called breeze. 5. Animals living in water breath through a special organ called gills. 6. The blanket of air around the earth is called atmosphere. 7. Oxygen supports combustion. 8. All weather changes are caused due to the atmosphere. 9. Harmful substances for environment are called pollutants. 10.Burning can only occur in the presence of oxygen . 11.The quantity of water vapours in air is important for water cycle in the nature. 12.Worms like earthworm breathe through their skin. Q.12.Draw and label layers of the air.
