ABSTRACT
In this experiment, we studied the effect of changing the diameter of a hole on radiation-
permeable plate, on the irradiance (intensity of the radiation) on the heat sensor. We also
conduct an experiment on two colours, which are silver plate and black plate to see the
difference in absorbability, reflectivity and emissivity.

The experiment is conducted using a controlled setup consisting of a source of heat to induce
thermal radiation, radiation-permeable plate that have variable diameter and two colour plate
which are silver and black plate, and also a detection system to measure the intensity of the
transmitted radiation. The diameter of the hole on the plate is systematically varied from
15mm 25mm and 35mm.The radiation source emits a narrow beam of light directed towards
the plate, which is positioned perpendicular to the heat source.

OBJECTIVE
1) To determine black plate and silver plate absorbability and reflectivity on thermal
radiation.

2)To determine the effect of changing diameter hole on silver plate on Irradiance radiometer.

Literature Review
Thermal radiation, is a fundamental mechanism in our universe. It dictates how heat flows
from the scorching sun to our planet and how buildings lose energy to the night sky. To fully
understand this phenomenon, we will dive into thermal radiation literature review. The
foundation of thermal radiation lies in its basic principles. Understanding Stefan-Boltzmann
Law,

2.0 STEFAN-BOLTZMANN LAW

The Stefan-Boltzmann Law states that the total energy radiated per unit surface area of a
black body in time unit, is directly proportional to the fourth power of the black body. This
means that as the temperature of a black body increases, the amount of energy it radiates
increase significantly. It also states that the higher temperature, the emitted radiation shift to a
shorter wavelength.

The formula can be expressed as:

𝑞𝑏=𝜎(𝑇
𝑠4−𝑇 𝑎4 )

𝑞𝑏 = 𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 𝑒𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑎 𝑏𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑘

𝑏𝑜𝑑𝑦 𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑒 (𝑊𝑚2)
𝜎 = 𝑆𝑡𝑒𝑓𝑎𝑛 − 𝐵𝑜𝑙𝑡𝑧𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡, 5.67 𝑥 108(𝑊𝑚−2𝐾−4)

𝑇𝑠 = 𝑇𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑒(K)
4

𝑇𝑎4 = 𝑇𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 (K)

METHODOLOGY

3.0 EQUIPMENT AND APPARATUS

1.Heat source
2.Heat sensor
3.Control box
4.Silver stainless steel plate
5.Black stainless steel plate
6. Stainless steel silver plate with various diameter (15mm,25mm,35mm)
7. Stopwatch

3.1 PROCEDURE

1.The apparatus is set up

2. The experiment start with no plate

3.The switch box is turned on.

4. The power (PWR) was set to 60% on the control box.

5. The heat source is turned on until the temperature is stabilized.

6. The stopwatch is used to measure time for 2 minutes, 4 minutes, 6 minutes and the reading
from the control box are recorded.

7. Experiment was repeated with silver stainless steel plate and black stainless-steel plate
with step from step 3 to step 6

8. Experiment was repeated with silver stainless steel with hole in the centre (15mm, 25mm
and 35mm)

9. Result in the experiment was taken and tabulated in a graph
