1 Introduction
This user guide is for users of the RefTran Maintenance Terminal (RMT).
System and maintenance personnel use the RMT in the operation and mainten-
ance of the Saab Sensis MLAT system.
Some components of the MLAT system are COTS items. For more information
on the operation and maintenance of these components, refer to the document-
ation supplied by the manufacturers.
n Folder and menu paths are in bold, and steps in a path are separated by
the > symbol.
Example: “Select Playback > Options > Sector.”
n Commands you enter at a Unix or Linux prompt are shown in this format:
Enter: command
where command indicates the exact Unix or Linux command, and
“Enter” indicates that you press ENTER/RETURN after typing the
command.
n When you are instructed to “click,” press the left mouse or trackball
button. You will be instructed to use right- or center-button clicks and
key-button combinations when necessary.
Figures that show the user interface are typical. Actual screen images may
differ slightly.

The MLAT system can operate with a wide range of airport configurations.
MLAT surveillance can track aircraft during all phases of movement, including
departure, landing, exiting, taxiing, stopping, and parking. The MLAT system
sends target information to its own display units and to external airport target
information fusion processors.
Figure 4-1 below shows a high-level diagram for a typical redundant MLAT
system.
n Other Mode S and Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS)
signals
The RUs send target information to the MLAT processing cabinet. This cabinet
includes a Target Processor (TP), which processes the information. It also
includes a Maintenance Display Terminal (MDT), which give you a maintenance
interface to the system.
For a full description of the MLAT system, refer to the System Design
Document (SDD) for the Multistatic Dependent Surveillance System, refer-
enced in 2.1 Saab Sensis Corporation Documents on page 2-1.
Maintenance The MDT shows information from the TP and gives users control of the MLAT
Display Terminal system.
(MDT)
Receiver/Transmitter A Receive-Transmit RU receives, decodes, and time stamps ATCRBS and Mode
(Remote Unit) S squitters and replies, sends information to the TP. It also transmits Mode S and
ATCRBS interrogations.
Receive-Only A Receive-Only RU receives, decodes, and time stamps ATCRBS and Mode S
(Remote Unit) squitters and replies, and sends information to the TP.
Reference Trans- The RefTran transmits periodic squitters that are used to test and calibrate the
mitter (RefTran) RUs and the TP.
Modem A modem is a communications link between the Remote Units and the Ethernet.
Ethernet LAN The Ethernet LAN is the communications backbone of the system. The LAN
connects the TP, the MDT, the RUs and external systems.
System Interface An SIU is a communication link between Ethernet and modems or external
Unit (SIU) systems.
Portable Display The PDT is a portable monitoring tool that gives you local control of the RUs.
Terminal (PDT)

ance Terminal
(RMT)
The Reference Transmitter (Figure 4-2 on the facing page) does 2 important
functions:
1. The RefTran helps to synchronize the clocks in the RUs. The clock
synchronization is necessary to let the system do multilateration on targets.
To synchronize the clocks, the RefTran transmits squitters that the RUs
receive. The timing of these signals, and the known locations of the RefTran
and RUs, lets the TP calculate correct times and thus correct positions of
targets.
n Set the basic RefTran configuration, including the messages that are
enabled and their related rates
n Show performance and fault information from the RefTran for use
introubleshooting procedures
For general information on the operation and maintenance of the RMT computer,
refer to the documentation from the manufacturer.
n 8 data bits
n 1 start bit
n 1 stop bit
n no parity bit
n no handshaking
2. Load the disk that contains the RMT.exe program file into the laptop.
7. Click the hard disk drive (typically C:) or a subfolder in this directory, if
necessary.
2. Connect the serial cable to the RMT serial port and to the RefTran MAINT
PORT (J1). Refer to Figure 5-2 above.
3. If necessary, start the computer and boot the Windows operating system.
5. In the Run window, enter the location of the RMT program file. For
example: C:\RMT.exe
6. Click OK.
7. The RMT starts communication with the RefTran in the sequence that
follows:
a. If power to the RefTran is OFF and you set it to ON, the RefTran sends
an "Inquire" message to the RMT. The RefTran waits 1.5 seconds for a
signal from the RMT.
b. When the RMT receives the "Inquire" message, it sends a "Data Ack"
message.
c. If the RefTran receives the "Data Ack" message from the RMT in less
than 1.5 seconds, it thinks it is connected to the RMT, and thus does
not transmit RF.
d. If the RefTran does not receive the "Data Ack" message in less than
1.5 seconds, the RefTran thinks that it is not connected to the RMT,
and thus transmits RF.
OR
If the RefTran has power and operates correctly, when you connect the
RMT, this does not have an effect on the RefTran. The RefTran is
connected to the RMT and continues to transmit RF.
8. After you set up the communications interface between the RMT and the
RefTran, refer to 6 RMT Operation on page 6-1 for instructions on how to
operate the RMT.
6 RMT Operation
You use the RMT to set RefTran parameters. You connect to the RefTran
through a local interface to do this.
The RMT login limits access to message parameters that have very important
values. These parameters are not frequently changed, and include these
message parameters:
