point, the slope and its intercepts. (M8AL-lg-1)

Equation Quest

Finding the equation of a given points by NumWorks application

Short Introduction

In our mathematics class, we often encounter a limited set of ordered pairs to

plot on the Cartesian plane. But imagine if you could unlock an infinite array of these
points to construct your unbounded line. Even more, envision being able to derive the
equation of a line merely by observing given points. Isn’t that cool?

In this activity, you'll find yourself not just predicting, but also unveiling the next
point on a line. This will be made possible with the assistance of NumWorks—a free
software/app and graphing calculator that makes everybody a math person. Get ready
to explore the infinite possibilities of linear equations!

Objectives

1. Identify the points in which a line passes through based on a graph and the table of
values.

2. Determine the process of finding the equation of the line given an ordered pair.

3. Write the equation of the line given an ordered pair.

4. Appreciate the use of NumWorks as a graphing calculator.

Materials
NumWorks application, Paper and Pen.

Procedure

1. First, Go to NumWorks>Grapher>Add an Element>Equation.

2. Input the Equation 𝑦 = 4𝑥 + 3 , click “OK’ then “Plot the Graph” and go to
the ‘Graph’ tab and observe the graph. Note: click ‘+’ to zoom in and ‘-‘ to
zoom out, you may also click ‘Navigate’ to explore the graph. \
3. Now list down the points in which the equation 𝑦 = 4𝑥 + 3 passes
through.

4. Second, go to the ‘Expression’ tab, delete the first equation by clicking the
‘three dots’ beside the equation and click ‘delete expression’. Then Add
element 𝑦 = 1/4𝑥 + 3 . Observe its graph.
5. Again write list down the points in which the equation 𝑦 = 1/4𝑥 + 3
passes through.

6. Lastly, find the equation that contains the following points.

Ordered Pair/Points Equation

{(− 2, − 5), (− 1, − 2)}

{(− 3, 1), (0, 2)}

{(0, 5), (2, 9)}

{(− 4, 2), (0, − 3)}

7. To check your equation, go to Grapher then add the points and your
equation. You may want to check the ‘table graph’ to see if your answer
coincides.

Discussion Questions

1. How do coefficients in a linear equation of the form y=mx+b affect the

graph’s characteristics?
2. How do constants in a linear equation of the form y=mx+b affect the
graph’s characteristics?
3. How did you come up with the equations that you found using the given
ordered pairs?

Conclusions

1. How did you find the activity using NumWorks?

2. Did you encounter any challenges in completing the activity using the
application?
