MINISTRY OF EDUCATION

SECONDARY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMME

GRADE SEVEN (7) SOCIAL STUDIES

WEEK TWO

LESSON ONE (1)

SUBJECT: SOCIAL STUDIES

GRADE: Seven (7)

TOPIC: Rules and Responsibilities

Sub- Topic: Organizations that are attached to the school.

OBJECTIVES: Students will:

 Correctly identify three organizations that are attached to the school.

 Effectively describe the roles of two organizations attached to the school.

 Explain how these organizations help to build the school.

CONCEPT

The phrase 'no man is an island' expresses the idea that human beings do badly when isolated from
others and need to be part of a community in order to thrive. Just like an individual, institutions
also need the support / network of other institutions to thrive effectively.

The school is no different, and has organizations attached to it that aids in the effective day to
day functioning and delivery of education.

WHAT IS AN ORGANIZATION?

An organization is an entity such as a company, an institution, or an association – comprising one

or more people and having a particular purpose.

Organisations that are attached to the school help to develop the well -being of the
students. These organisations perform specific roles and must be managed effectively to
attain their objectives.

A few important organisations are:

 Prefect Body

 Student Body/Council.

 Parent-Teacher Association.

 School Board.

 School Improvement Action Committee.

In addition to these, some schools have an ALUMINI or Old Student Association (Past Students
Association).

 The Prefect Body

This group is made up of responsible students who are expected to assist teachers in the day-to-
day management of the school and to ensure that the students observe the school rules. There is
usually a representative from each grade but in some schools the senior students play the major
role.

Prefects mainly help to monitor the behavior of other students and help the teachers to supervise
activities, when the teachers are not around. Students generally have to respect the prefects and
obey them.

 The Student Body

The students in this group represent all the students in the school. They are elected to this body
and are involved in the general welfare of the students.

 The Parent-Teacher Association

This body is comprised of parents and teachers. The objective is to help with the welfare of the
students. Many Parent-Teacher Associations help with fund raising for the development of the
physical facilities as well as to fund major activities.

 School Improvement Action Committee

The role is similar to the Parent- Teacher Association. However, the group includes representative
of the students as well as persons who are not parents, but who have an interest in the welfare of
the school.

 The School Board

The School Board consists of persons who have been recommended to serve as members.

The members may be drawn from several organizations. They are much involved in the policy-
