INSTRUCTIONS: Answer Question ONE and any other TWO Questions

Q1. a) In relation to computer memory highlight two differences between SRAM


and DRAM. (2 marks)

b) Below are common problems encountered by computer users, in each of


the situation, identify a probable problem and propose a viable solution to
the problem.
i) The computer can't start?
ii) The computer can’t get on to the internet? (4 marks)

c) You have been offered an ICT support technician position at at the


Catholic University of Eastern Africa. A staff calls and informs you that
after some minutes of operation the computer entered into a “Blue Screen
of Death” state. Explain three likely causes of the problem. (3 marks)

d) By use of examples differentiate between the physical and logical security


of a computer system. (2 marks)

e) Describe the function of the following disk management tools in respect to


computer maintenance:
i) CHKDSK
ii) Defrag (4 marks)

f) Discuss two main reasons why you should develop a computer preventive
maintenance plan in your organization. (2 marks)

g) Identify TWO devices that can be connected to each of the following


computer ports: (3 marks)

iii) Serial port,

h) Label the marked parts (7 marks)

Q2. a) Using examples of areas of application discuss the functionality difference


between FAT32 and NTFS file system. (8 marks)

b) You have been assigned a role to upgrade the computer’s memory in the
computer lab. Explain THREE factors to consider when choosing the
memory for the computers (6 marks)

c) In your role as an ICT support technician describe THREE symptoms that


would support your justification to a conclusion that the computer is infected
by a virus. (6 marks)

Q3. a) Before installing an operating system, there is need to partition the hard disk.
Describe FOUR main steps involved in partitioning a hard disk in Windows 8
operating system. (8 marks)

b) You recently purchased a secondhand computer that happen to have an


unknown BIOS password. Explain TWO methods to reset the BIOS to default
factory settings. (4 marks)

c) You suspect that the computer processor is overheating. Identify TWO


symptoms to support your suspicion and how you would go about to resolve
the problems (8 marks)

Q4. a) A user has reported to you that their printer is not printing. Describe FOUR
fixes to troubleshoot the printer on a Windows PC (8 marks)

b) Discuss THREE general strategies for supporting and resolving a


computers user’s problems. (6 marks)

c) Explain the importance of the following in respect to computer


maintenance.
i) Regularly updating your antivirus.
ii) Regularly updating your operating system..
iii) Regularly Blowing dust from your computer system. (6 marks)

Q5. a) Discuss FOUR factors to be considered when choosing an operating


system for your computer (8 marks)

b) Using valid examples; provide the use of the following Ms-Dos commands.
i) MKDIR
ii) Copy con (4 marks)

c) The power on Self-Test (POST) plays a great role in the diagnostic
process of a computer system. Using valid examples explain how the
POST can be used as a diagnostic tool (8 marks)
