Introduction
You have learned from the past lessons that a story has elements like the
setting and characters. These elements of the story will help you understand the
structure of a literary text.
The setting tells when and where the story happened while characters are the
people, animals or things that the plot revolves around. Knowing these elements will
help you understand better the story you are reading.
Read the story. The sentences written in bold letters will help you identify the plot.
A Dream Come True
Happy Belo had always wanted a computer. Where he lived in the city it seemed
as if everyone had a computer.
Every day, he would pass by the computer store and stare at the units for so long that the
owner would ask him if he wanted to buy one. Happy would only shake his head and leave the
store forlorn. He knew computers cost a lot.
He saved money from his job at the grocery store. Everyone liked him
there because he was always smiling. “Your name fits you well, Happy,” said Mrs.
Tan, the owner of the store. “You’re the happiest person I ever know!” Happy felt
funny when he heard what Mrs. Tan said. He didn’t feel as happy as he looked.
But when he counted his money every night, he felt sad. He didn’t have enough
to buy a computer, and he thought he never would.
One day, Happy was walking home from the store. He heard a strange noise
coming from the nearby computer store. What could it be? He ran to look. To his
surprise, he saw two men pointing a gun to the store owner. “They must be bad
men trying to rob the store,” he thought.
There was no time to lose. If these men will succeed, they will rob the store of
its money and would even harm the owner. Happy had to move fast. He inched his
way through the narrow street and went to a telephone booth. He called the police
and in no time all the officers came and apprehended the robbers. The robbers did
not succeed in their plans and failed to harm the owner.
The store owner was very grateful to Happy. To thank him, he gave him a
new computer. Happy was indeed happy.

will know the whole events or plot in the story.
What is Plot?
It is what happens in a story. It is also known as the foundation of a story,

and events in a chronological manner.
There are five main elements in a plot.
1. Beginning

1
This is the introduction of the story, where characters and setting are
established. The conflict or main problem is introduced as well.
2. Rising Action
This happens when a series of events build up to the conflict. The main
characters are established in this part, and at the same time, events begin to
get complicated. It is during this part of a story that excitement, tension, or crisis
are encountered.
3. Climax
The main point of the plot is the climax. This is the turning point of the story.
This is meant to be the moment of highest interest and emotion, leaving the
reader wondering what is going to happen next.
4. Falling Action/ Denouement
This is the explanation part of the story. It happens when events and
complications begin to resolve. The results of the actions of the main characters
are presented in this part of the story.

He just couldn’t find anything. He was about to give up when he saw some beautiful
