CALCULATION FOR DESIGN FLOOD

1) Using modified Inglis formula :-

Q = C √A
A = Catchment area of nallah upto site.
C = 21 .
Q = 21 √0.75 = 18.19 Cumecs.

2) Using area slope method :-

V =1 x R 2/3 x S ½
n
N= 0.030 for canals and river in bad order, occasional stones and weeds.
R= Hydraulic mean depth = A/P.
A= C.S. area of nallah upto HFL = (7.80x 2,.50) =19.50 m2.
P= Wetted perimeter = 5.00 + 7.80) =12.80 mts.
S=Bed slope of nallah = 1: 82 Say... 1:90
R= 19.50
12.80 = 1.52
Q= Ax 1/n x R 2/3 x S ½

= 19.50 x1/0.03 x1.52x (1/90 ) ½.

=90.70 Cumecs.
Also, V= 4.65 mts/Sec.

3) Using Dickness formula :-

Q= C x (A) ¾
A= 0.75 s sq.km.
C= 25 for western ghats.
Q= 25 x (0.75 ) ¾ = 20.14 Cumecs.
However the discharge Q= 90.70 Cumecs is used for the design for the design of bandhara.

Calculations for design flood

1) Design flood discharge ‘Q’ = 90.70 Cumecs.

2) Lowest bed level of nallah = 97.500 R.L. (Assumed)
3) Canal bed level = 99.100 R.L.
4) Top of gate,, = 99.500 R.L.
5) Bligh’s coefficient = 8 ( for coarse graded sand )..
6)Length of bandhara = 7.80 mts.

Calculations for creep length along apron :-

2.00

L3 L1 L2 L4

Total maximum head = 2.00mts.

Total creep length required including creep along the cut off is given by, L= C x H.
= 8 x 2.00 = 16.00 mts.

The D/s floor creep length is given by,

L 2 = 2.21 x √ H/10 = 2.21 x 8x √ 2.00/10 = 8.29 mts Say. 8.50 mts.

Assuming depth of cut off = 1.50 mts.

Length of pier = 2.50 mts.

U/s floor length is given by,

= 16.00 – 8.50 – 2.50 – (2 x 2 x 1.50)

= – 1.00 mts.

However provide a nominal length of 3.00 mts for u/s apron.

Q = 90.70

V=Q= 90.70 .
A (2.00 x 4.90)

= 9.26

L4 = 18 x c √ H – V – L2
10 75

L4 = 18 x 8 √ 2.00 – 9.26 – 8.50

10 75
= 31.34 mts.

However provide D/s loose talus as 6.00 mts.U/s as 3.00 mts. .

CALCULATION OF DEPTH OF CUT OFF:-

The Larcy’s scour depth is given by,

R= 135 ( q/f) 1/3

F= silt factor = 1 (assumed)

q = discharge per unit run.

q = Q/L = 90.70 = 18.51

4.90
.
. . R = 1.35 x (18.51)1/3
1

R = 3.53 mts.

.
. . Depth of cut of below H.F.L. = 1.25 R.

= 1.25 x 3.53 = 4.41 mts.

.
. . R. L. of bottom of cut off = 99.700 – 4.41 = 95.29 R.L.

Depth of cut off = 97.50 – 95.29 = 2.21 mts.

However provide a depth of cut off 1.50 m below the bed level
i.e. upto R.L. 96.00 R.L.

Total uplift pressure at “A” is given by.

H = 2.00 x 15.60 = 1.46

21.40
Hence floor thickness ‘t’ At ‘A’ is given by.

T= 1.33 x 1.46 = 1.33 x 1.46 = 1.39 mts.

G-1 2.40 - 1
Provide a floor thickness of 1.40 mts.
