(c) (i) and (iv) (d) Only (iv)

3) Given below are two statements, Assertion (A) and Reason (R). (1
Select the correct answer to these questions from the options given below )

Page 1 of 13
Assertion (A) : Velocity versus time graph of a particle in uniform motion
along a straight path is a line parallel to the time axis.

Reason (R) : If the displacement of an object is proportional to the square

of the time taken then the body is moving with uniformly accelerated
motion.

a) Both A and R are true and R is correct explanation of the assertion.

b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of the
assertion.
c) A is true but R is false.
d) A is false but R is true

4) Equal changes in velocity in equal intervals of time.Hence the body is (2

moving with uniform acceleration )

Distance = ½ x7 x 14 = 49m

5) The figure below shows the velocity-time graph of an object of mass 5 kg. (2
)
Find the force acting on the object from

1. O to A

2. A to B

OR

An object with a mass of 12,000 g is moving with a velocity of 18 km/h. It

takes 3 s to stop after the brakes are applied. Calculate the force exerted
by brakes.

From O To A, a= 20m/s2, F = ma = 5 x 20 = 100N

From Ato B,F= 0

OR

m= 12000g =12kg , u = 18km/h = 18 x 5/18 = 5m/s . v = 0 , t= 3s

a = (v-u)/t = -5/3 m/s2, negative sign indicates retardation

F = ma = 12 x -5/3 = -20N

Page 2 of 13
6) u =0 , a = 2m/s2, s = 625 (2
)
v2 – u 2 = 2as’
v2 = 2 x 2 x 625
v = 2x 25 =50m/s

s = 729m, a = 2m/s2, t = ?

s = ut + at2/2
729 = 2 t2/2
t2 = 729, t= 27s

7) Give reason for the following: (3

)
A. Why does a passenger who is jumping out of a rapidly moving bus
fall forward?
B. Why is it difficult for a fireman to hose, which ejects large amount
of water at a high velocity?
C. Road accidents at high speeds are worse that the accidents at low
speeds.

When the passenger jumps out of a fast-moving bus/train, his feet will come
to rest on touching the ground, whereas the upper part of his body continues
to move forward, due to the inertia of motion. As a result, if he does not run
forward he will fall with his face in downwards direction.
b. When fireman directs a large amount of water at a high velocity on fire
from a hose pipe, they have to hold the hose pipe strongly because of its
tendency to go backwards. The backward movement of the hose pipe is due to
the backward reaction force of water rushing out through it in the forward
direction at a high speed as per the Newton's third law of motion.
c. When road accidents happen at very high speeds, a larger change in momentum
occurs in a very short span of time. Due to that larger forces are created and the
chances of damage increase to the maximum. Whereas, when accidents happen at low

Page 3 of 13
speeds, the change in momentum is low. That's why the forces involved are small, which
cause less damage.

8) A. A plastic ball and a cricket ball are rolled on the floor with the (3
same velocity. Which one will a larger distance before stopping? )
Justify your answer.
B. The velocity-time graph of an object of mass 50 g is shown in the
figure. Analyse the graph and calculate the force on the object in
time interval 0 to 3 s.

Cricket ball has a heavier mass than the ball, and the inertia of a body depends upon its
mass. A body with a heavy mass has more inertia and vice versa. Due to high inertia, the
cricket bat cannot move a larger distance than the ball.

B. u = 0, v = 120m/s, t = 3s

a = (120-0)/3 = 40 m/s

F= ma = (50/1000) x40 = 2N

9) Derive the relation S = ut + ½ at2 using graphical method. (3

)
Practice derivations for all equations of motion from notebook.This was
done during revision

10 (4
) )
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. (Internal choice is
provided in one of the sub-parts)

Page 4 of 13
A distance-time graph tells us how far an object has moved with time.
Given below is a distance-time graph of an object. Analyse the graph and
answer the questions that follow:

A. Which part of the journey is the fastest? Justify.

B. Explain the motion of the object at part B with reason.
C. Find the speed at part C (40 s to 60s)
OR
D. Find the average speed of the object.
A. It is travelling the fastest at C.
B. The body is at Rest as it remains at 50m as time passes by.
C. Speed = distance /time = 175/20 = 8.75 m/s

OR

Average speed = total distance covered /total time = 175/60 = 2.92

11 A. Analyse the velocity-time graph given below, which shows the (5

) movement of a cyclist in a straight road. )
Calculate the distance covered by the cyclist in 10 s.

Page 5 of 13
B. An object starts from rest travels 20 m in first 2 s and 160 m in
next 4 s.
i. Is the acceleration uniform in this case? Justify.
ii. What will be the velocity after 7 s from the start?

OR

A. An aeroplane starts from rest accelerates uniformly at the rate of 3

m/s2 for half a minute before taking off.

i. Find the velocity with which the plane took off.

ii. Find the distance covered before the take off.
B. A boy of mass 40 kg jumps with a horizontal velocity of 5 m/s onto
a stationary cart with frictionless wheels. The mass of the cart is 3
kg. What is his velocity as the cart starts moving?
C. A gun recoils when a bullet is fired from it. Why is the acceleration
produced in gun less than that of the bullet?

Area of V-t graph = Area of rectangle + Area of Trapezium

= 2 x 4 +{ (2+8) x 6}/2 = 38m

OR

A ) u = 0, a = 3m/2, t = 0.5 min = 0.5 x 60 = 30sec

v = u + at = 0 + 30 x 3 = 90 m/s

Page 6 of 13
s = ut + ½ at 2 = 1/2 ( 3x 30 x 30) = 1350m

C.Action reaction pair is formed when bullet is fired. Equal and opposite
forces act on the bullet and the gun.
Now we know that the acceleration caused due to a force,a = F/m
Thus for same force, the smaller mass object has greater acceleration. Thus
the acceleration of the bullet is greater than that of gun.

20 Describe an activity to show that particles of matter have space between 2

) them.

• Take a glass of water, add sugar/salt and stir.

• You will observe that there is no rise in the water level.
• This shows that particles of matter have spaces between them.
When sugar/salt is added to the water, the sugar particles adjust
themselves in the space between the water particles.
• Hence, we can say that particles of matter have space between
them.

22 Give reasons for the following: 3

) A. Evaporation produces cooling.
During evaporation, liquid particles gain energy from their surroundings in
order to overcome the force of attraction between them. As a result, heat

Page 10 of 13
energy is lost in the surroundings. It is clear from the preceding explanation
that evaporation causes cooling.

B. Rate of evaporation of an aqueous solution decrease with increase in

humidity.
High humidity in the environment indicates that the air is already saturated
with water vapour. This indicates that the air can no more accommodate
water vapours in it.
This causes the rate of evaporation to decrease significantly.
Therefore, the rate of evaporation of an aqueous solution decreases with an
increase in humidity.

C. Sponge though compressible is a solid.

Sponge is compressible because it is having minute pores in which
air is trapped ,on presssing the air is expelled. it is still considered
as a solid because it has a definite volume and shape does not
changes unless compressed.
23 Read the passage and answer any four questions from i to v. 4
)
From the Bohr-Bury scheme, we know that the outermost shell of an atom
can accommodate a maximum of 8 electrons. It was observed that the
atoms of elements, having a completely filled outermost shell show little
chemical activity. In other words, their combining capacity or valency is
zero. The combining capacity of the atoms of other elements, that is, their
tendency to react and form molecules with atoms of the same or different
elements, was thus explained as an attempt to attain a fully-filled
outermost shell.

C. Study the picture given below and answer the questions that follow:

i) Identify and define the process.

Sublimation, in physics, conversion of a substance from the solid to
the gaseous state without its becoming liquid.
ii) What do you infer from the activity?
We infer from the above activity that ammonium chloride or camphor
can sublime and can be purified by sublimation.

OR

A) Define valence shell.

Page 12 of 13
The outermost shell or orbital of an atom is called its valence shell. The
electrons in these shells take part in bonding with other atoms.

B) List the postulates of Rutherford’s model of an atom.

i) The mass of an atom is concentrated in a small space called the nucleus. ii)
Atoms majorly consist of positively charged particles. iii) Negatively charged
electrons revolve around atoms in circular paths called orbits at very high
speed.

C) Give Reasons:
i) Sponge is a solid, yet we can compress it.
Sponge is compressible because it is having minute pores in which
air is trapped ,on presssing the air is expelled. it is still considered
as a solid because it has a definite volume and shape does not
changes unless compressed.

ii) We can get the smell of perfume sitting several meters away.
This is because perfumes contain volatile solvent which carries pleasant
smelling vapours. They diffuse quite fast and can reach to people sitting
several meters away.
