Readers note
Although it is one of the most boring subject for the reader, but it is also one of the most real
life applicable subject, hence visualising the concept in the real life is the only way of
understanding, and believe me once the day you will start visualising the concepts the
perception of boring subject will be ruined of, I am making these notes with the motive to let
you visualise the concept and built the intuition of understanding
#01 Introduction to computer system

 Meaning of the term computer system

We all are aware about computers; we are using them on daily basis, the complex human
life today starts with a computer and end with the computers, we are surrounded with
their various forms, however in order understand the term in an organized manner we
need a clear cut meaning so “A device or machine which follow the instruction &
command of human being and give them result accordingly, can be stated as a computer”
So from the above stated meaning only it is clear that the scope of computer is not only
limited up to P.C, Laptop. This is the general perception in regards to computer but the
perception is incorrect.

 Definition of computers

Let’s understand some of the important definition of computer


1) As according to
Collin English Dictionary
“A device, usually electronic, that process data according to set of instruction”
2) As according to
Que’s Computer User dictionary
“A machine capable of following instruction to alter data in a desirable way and to
perform at least some of these operation without human intervention”
3) As according to
Microsoft press computer dictionary
“Any machine that does three things: accepts structured input, process it according to
prescribed rules and produces the result as output”
 Features of a computer
So from above stated definition we can point out the following features of a computer
system:
A) It is an integrated system which comprises of hardware and software.
B) Hardware is the physical parts of the computer.
C) Software helps the devices to perform some predetermined task.
D) Besides single commands or instructions a computer can execute a stored list of
instruction called as programme1.
E) Computer responds to a specific set of instruction2 in a well defined manner.
F) Computer can perform computation, communication and processing task.
G) A computer system is defined by its configuration, configuration consist of

To understand this features theoretically is somewhere typical so lets understand

Hardware devices in a computer

The diagram explains the hardware devices which we generally used in operating
a computer system. So in short we can say that a device which is physically
present in the computer system is said to be a hardware device. On the other hand
those elements of the computer which have no physical existence but help the
system to operate are known as software, some of the examples of software are
Operating system: Windows 7, software’s are discussed in detail in the later part
of the chapter.
