2. 2 mWb is to be produced in the air gap of the magnetic circuit shown in the given figure. How
much ampere turns the coil must provide to achieve this? Relative permeability of the core
material may be assumed to be constant and equal to 5000. All the dimensions shown are in cm
and the sectional area is throughout.
3. A magnetic circuit is made up of low-carbon mild steel laminations shaped as shown in the
given figure. The width of the core is and the core is built to a depth of , of which
8% is taken up by insulation between the laminations. The air gap is long and the
effective area of the gap is . The coil is wound with 800 turns. If the leakage factor is
1.2, calculate the magnetizing current required to produce a flux of 0.0025 Wb across the air
gap. If required, use the magnetization characteristics of mild steel given in figure. (Ans: I=5A)
5. The magnetic circuit shown in the given figure has following dimensions:
, length of air gap = 2 mm. Taking the relative permeability of the core material as 800,
find the required current in the 600-turn exciting coil so as to establish a flux of 100 µWb in the
air gap. Neglect leakage and fringing. (Ans: 0.499 A)
6. In the magnetic circuit shown in the given figure, the limbs B and C have area of cross-section
and , and air gap of 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm, respectively. If the flux in the limb B is
1.5 mWb, find the flux in the limb A, assuming permeability of the iron to be infinite. Also
determine the value of the exciting current I, if the coil has 500 turns. (Ans: 3mWb, I=238.7 mA)
8. A 50 Hz transformer has 500 turns primary which on no-load takes 60 W power at a current 0.4
A at an input voltage of 220 V. The resistance of the winding is . Calculate: (a) the core loss,
(b) the magnetizing reactance and (c) the core loss resistance . Neglect leakage reactance.
(Ans: (a) 59.88 W (b) 751 and (c) 806 )
9. A 500 kVA transformer has 95% efficiency at full load and also at 60% of full load both at upf.
(a) Separate out the transformer losses.
(b) Determine the transformer efficiency at 75% full load, upf.
(Ans: (a) (b) 95.15%)
10. In a 25 KVA, 2000/200V transformer the iron and copper losses are 200W and 400W
respectively. Calculate the efficiency at half load and 0.8 power factor lagging. Also determine
the maximum efficiency and the corresponding load.
11. In a transformer core, the hysteresis and eddy current losses are 80W and 50W at normal
voltage and frequency. Calculate the losses when voltage and frequency are increased by 20%.
13. A 25 KVA, 2200/220V, 50 Hz single phase transformer has the following resistance and leakage
reactances:
14. The total core loss of a specimen of silicon steel is found to be 1500W at 50 Hz. Keeping the flux
density constant, the loss becomes 3000W when the frequency is raised to 75 Hz. Calculate
separately the hysteresis and eddy current loss at each of these frequencies.
[Ans: Ph=500W, Pe=1000W at 50 Hz & Ph=750W, Pe=2250W at 75 Hz]
15. The maximum efficiency of a 500 kVA, 3000/500 V, 50 Hz single-phase transformer is 98% and
occurs at 3/4 full load, unity pf. If the impedance is 10%, calculate the regulation at full load, 0.8
lagging pf. (Ans: 7.034%)
