● Title : Märchenbilder
● Synopsis : Robert Alexander Schumann was born in Zwickau, Saxony, on June 8th,
1810. At first, his time was spent almost equally between music and literature but
after that he stopped and study law. Yet soon later he return back and focused on
composition due to his injured right hand. By 1850, however, Schumann began to
show signs of mental breakdown. By the following year, the symptoms worsened.
He then requested to be put in an asylum in Bonn until his death on July 29th,
1856. Schumann composed the Märchenbilder ("Fairytale Pictures") in March 1851,
not long after the first signs of his mental illness began to show. The final
movement, Slowly and with a melancholy expression, presents a lyrical theme in
the viola with a sonorous accompaniment in the piano. One interpretation could be
that this movement represents the happy ending with which all fairy tales must
end.
