PART B

COMPREHENSION

Carefully read the passage and answer all the questions that follow it.

One day, some friends who came from coastal towns decided to travel home with Aminu who
has lived in Tamale all his life. Aminu kept his fear of the deep vast sea to himself for the
reason that his friends would tease him. In spite of this, he travelled with them.

They had learned in class that a harbour is a place at the coast where ships come to offload
goods and take other products away. Aminu and his friends decided to go to the harbour for an
excursion. They made friends with a woman who works at the harbour who told them a lot
about what goes on there. They learned that Accra once had a harbour. Ships could not come
to this shallow and rough coast. So, they stopped in the deep seas while paddle canoes carried
their goods to the shore. This method caused a lot of delays. Queues of ships were always seen
off the coast of Accra Harbour waiting for their turn.

A modern and safe harbour was built along the coastline in Tema. The deep and stable sea allow
all sizes of ships to travel close to the coast. Goods sheds fitted with electric cranes have been
built there to make it easier and faster to load and offload goods. As a result, trading has
increased rapidly. Other states in West Africa import and export products through Tema
Harbour which is helping in Ghana’s development. Countries pay for their goods and the people
around the harbour have jobs to do.

13
After a long day, Aminu and his friends came home happy that he did not get drowned as he
had thought.

Questions

1. Give one reason Aminu did not want to travel to the coast.
2. How different was Tema Harbour from that in Accra?
3. What is the contribution of harbours to the growth of Ghana?

5. Why was Tema harbour constructed?
6. Replace the following words as used as used in the passage.
i. decided
ii. tease
iii. shore
iv. development
