This type of conditional is used to think about situations in the past that did not occur and to
imagine what results they would have had.

Este tipo de condicional se utiliza para pensar en situaciones del pasado que no ocurrieron y para
imaginar qué resultados hubieran tenido.

Examples:

If you had started studying earlier, you would have been able to go out tonight.

Si hubieras empezado a estudiar antes, habrías podido salir esta noche.

If I had known you were in trouble, I would have helped you.

Si hubiera sabido que estabas en problemas, te habría ayudado.

forma de la tercera condicional

The third conditional has the following structure:


If + past perfect + “,” + subject + would + have + past participle of main
verb
Examples:
If we had had time, we would have come to your party.
In the if-clause (in blue), past perfect is used. This verb tense is used to
present actions that happened or were completed before another action in
the past.
As in the present perfect, the past perfect is formed with the auxiliary verb
"to have" and the past participle. In this case, though, the auxiliary verb is in
the past tense, “had”.
Example:
If he had come, we would have been satisfied.
Remember that to form the past participle you must consider whether the
verb is regular (it will be formed by adding the particle -ed at the end of the
verb) or irregular.
Sometimes, other modal verbs such as could, might are used instead
of would.
Examples:
If I had remembered it was your birthday, I would have bought you a
present.
If I had saved my money, I could have gone on holiday.
If we had had time, we might have gone to the beach.
As in the other conditionals, the order of the condition (if-clause) and the
result can be inverted, considering that when the condition goes after the
result, the comma is eliminated.
Example:
I would have bought it if it had been cheaper.

El tercer condicional tiene la siguiente estructura:

If + pasado perfecto + “,” + sujeto + had + have +


participio pasado del verbo principal

Ejemplos:
Si hubiéramos tenido tiempo, habríamos venido a
tu fiesta.

En la cláusula if (en azul), se utiliza el pasado


perfecto. Este tiempo verbal se utiliza para presentar
acciones que sucedieron o se completaron antes de
otra acción en el pasado.

Como en el presente perfecto, el pasado perfecto se


forma con el verbo auxiliar "to have" y el participio
pasado. En este caso, sin embargo, el verbo auxiliar
está en tiempo pasado, “had”.

Ejemplo:
Si hubiera venido, estaríamos satisfechos.

Recuerda que para formar el participio pasado debes


considerar si el verbo es regular (se formará
añadiendo la partícula -ed al final del verbo) o
irregular.

A veces, se utilizan otros verbos modales como


might, might, en lugar de haría.

Ejemplos:
Si hubiera recordado que era tu cumpleaños, te
habría comprado un regalo.
Si hubiera ahorrado mi dinero, podría haberme ido
de vacaciones.

Si hubiéramos tenido tiempo, quizás habríamos ido


a la playa.

Como en los demás condicionales, el orden de la


condición (cláusula if) y el resultado se puede
invertir, considerando que cuando la condición va
detrás del resultado, se elimina la coma.

Ejemplo:
Lo habría comprado si hubiera sido más barato.
