No general solution is available at present for such a case. However previous method
given by Johnson can be applied if the following two conditions are satisfie4, '
Condition 1. The minimum of the times for different jobs on machine A is atleast equal
to the maximum of the times of different jobs on machine B.
Condition 2. The minimum of the times for different jobs on machine C is atleast equal
to the maximum of the times of different jobs on machine B ·

Method. Replace the given problem with an equal problem involvmg <ii' jobs two machines
here two machines fictitious say G & H and define the corresponding processing time <j,
G. & Hi as follows :
Gi = + ~. Hi = + q, . Vi = 1, 2, 3 ...... n
Thus for the job 1 ~1 = A1 + B1; H1 = B1 + C1
for the job 2 G2 = A2 + B2, . H2 = B2 + so on
Now apply the same procedure and find out the optimal sequence which shall also be
imal for the original problem.

Solution.
Min of Ai = 2 2: Max. = 8 • Not satisfied. (
Min of q = 8 2: Max. -~ = 8 • Satisfied. /
Since one of the conditions are ~sfied, the above problem can be converted into 'n' jobs,
2machines. .
Two fictitious operations G & H can be written as (in times)
Job Gi = Ai + H1 =- B1 + C1
1 3 + 8 ~Cf1.i "- - -s-+-t3-=-21-
2 12 + 6 =18 6 + 14 =20

Examining the column G i & Hi we find that the smallest time is 8 of job 4 on G, thus
we assign job 4 first as sliown 'below now delete 4 ....1L

~ r assigning 4 & 3, we see that there ar~ equal minimum values, processing time of 11

Now jobs 2 & 6 are left.. The smallest value isl2 for job 6 on machine G so we assjgn job
