Terminologies
Light
- electromagnetic radiation that can be detected by the human
eye.
Terminologies
Optics
- branch of physics that studies the behavior and properties of
light, including its interactions with matter and the construction
of instruments that use or detect it.
Luminous Intensity
- Describes the quantity of light that is radiated in a particular/
given direction.
Terminologies
Lumens
- measure of the total amount of visible light (to the human eye)
from a lamp or light source. The higher the lumen rating the
“brighter” the lamp will appear.
Terminologies
Candela
- unit of luminous intensity
Footcandle
- number of lumens falling on an area one square foot one foot
away
Lux
- is the amount of lumens falling on an area one square meter
one meter away. One (1) footcandle is equivalent to 10.76 lux.
Terminologies
Luminous Flux
- is describes the quantity of light emitted by a light source per
second in all direction.
Luminance
- Luminous intensity emitted by the surface area of 1 cm² (or 1
m²) of the light source. It specifies the brightness of a surface
and is essentially dependent on its and color.
Terminologies
Human Eye
- Sensory organ, part of the sensory nervous system, that reacts
to visible light and allows humans to use visual information for
various purposes including seeing things, keeping balance, and
maintaining circadian rhythm.
Photometry
- the science of the measurement of light, in terms of its
perceived brightness to the human eye.
Terminologies
Lighting / Illumination
- Deliberate use of light to achieve practical or aesthetic effects.
Lighting includes the use of both artificial light sources like
lamps and light fixtures, as well as natural illumination by
capturing daylight.
Light Fixture / Fitting / Luminaire
- electrical device containing an electric lamp that provides
illumination. All light fixtures have a fixture body and one or
more lamps.
Terminologies
Lamp
- A generic term for a man-made source of radiation in and near
the visible portion of the Electromagnetic spectrum.
Glare
- sensation caused by luminance in the visual field that are too
bright. Discomfort, annoyance, or reduced productivity can
result.
Terminologies
Correlated Color Temperature
- The temperature of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates
light of comparable hue to that of the light source. Stated in the
unit of absolute temperature, kelvin.
Terminologies
Color Rendering Index
- The scale from 0 to 100 percent indicating how accurate a
given light source is at rendering color when compared to a
reference light source.
Terminologies
Absorption
- Loss of light when light rays strikes or traverses any medium.
Diffuse Reflection
- a beam of light is reflected diffusely, that is, its ray is scattered
in all directions, if it strikes a rough or matte surface.
Specular Reflection
- a beam of light is specular reflected when a light ray striking a
shiny or glossy surface at an angle of incidence is reflected as
the same beam with equal angle of reflection.
Terminologies
Reflectance
- also called “reflection factor”, it is the ratio of light reflected by a
surface to the light falling upon it.
Transmission
- is the passage of light through a medium when light falls upon a
transparent material.
Transmittance
- also called “transmission factor”, it is the ratio of light
transmitted to light striking the surface.
