ECON 2330/3330 – Winter 2024

Collaborative Learning Assignments and Project Learning outcomes

On successful completion, you will be able to
• Enhance awareness of data and analytics in business and economic applications.
• Successfully work in teams to achieve group and organizational objectives.
• Familiarize with current business and economic issues with an exploration of open-
source data.
• Demonstrate knowledge of statistical data analysis techniques and apply various
techniques to resolve business and economic information needs.
• Critically examining problem areas, developing feasible analytics decision options,
developing key recommendations, and communicating.
• Good understanding of the course applications and R-Commander software

Instructions:
Collaborative Learning Assignments: Grade weightage 15 %
Part 1.1: Grade weightage 5%

Dataset Selection: Choose a dataset relevant to your field of study from the online resources.
For instance, you could select a dataset related to finance, marketing, economics, supply chain,
social issues, or any other field you are focusing on. (Each of the group members must select
their own dataset)
Explore: https://www.databasestar.com/free-data-sets/
https://www.kaggle.com/datasets

https://www.reddit.com/r/datasets/
https://data.world/datasets/open-data
Dataset Criteria: Ensure that the selected dataset meets the following criteria:
• Contains a minimum of five or more variables. (columns)
• Consists of at least 30 rows.
• Includes at least two continuous(numeric) variables.
• Contains at least two nominal or categorical variables or ordinal variables.
Data Download and Format: Download the chosen dataset and save it in EXCEL/CSV format
(.xlsx/csv).
Data Transformation: For each nominal or categorical variable, add an additional column in the
EXCEL datasheet and keep both in coded form and original in the dataset.

Example:
Gender Gender_coded Edu_code Education
Male 1 3 Graduate degree
Female 2 2 Undergraduate degree
Female 2 1 High School diploma
Male 1 3 Graduate degree

Dummy Coding: Create dummy coding for Nominal or Categorical variables with more than
two values (k-1 dummy categories)

Example:
Education Edu_code Dummy_GD Dummy_UG
Graduate degree 3 1 0
Undergraduate degree 2 0 1
High School diploma 1 0 0
Graduate degree 3 1 0
High School diploma 1 0 0
High School diploma 1 0 0
Graduate degree 3 1 0

Submission
a. Write a brief write-up about your data and sources if any (Maximum 2-pages)
b. Explore data through suitable graphical representations.
c. Explore numerical data summaries -Like Mean, Standard Deviation, and Correlations,
whatever is necessary.
Submit all the Analysis (for all five datasets of group members together in a single PDF file),
with a brief write-up about the data, analysis objective, and results. (Maximum 5-8 pages each)
Part 1.2: Grade weightage 5%

• Explore the following through R-Commander in the selected datasets.

a. Perform appropriate one-sample, two-sample mean, proportions, variance and ANOVA tests
for your data and write your conclusions.
Submit all the Analysis (all five datasets in a single file), with a brief write-up about the data,
analysis objective, and results. (Maximum 5 pages each)

Part 1.3: Grade weightage 5%

• Develop simple linear or multiple linear Regression models and draw the conclusions.
• Submit all the Analysis (all five datasets in a single file), with a brief write-up about the
data, analysis objectives, and results. (Maximum 5 pages each single person)
Submission Format: All assignments should be submitted as a single file. Each group member's
name and TID, should be clearly indicated under their respective contributions.
Grading Criteria: Common grades will be assigned to the entire group, calculated as the average
of the best three grades achieved by the group members for the assignment.
Individual Accountability: It is important to note that lower grades may be allocated to
individuals who contribute poor quality work to the assignment.
Late Submission Policy: Late submissions will incur a penalty of 20% deduction from the final
assigned grades.
Individual submissions: Without group will incur a penalty of 20% deduction from the final
assigned grades.
Individual Project Report and Presentation
