Question : Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam. (Answer in 4 s.f or more)

Lets consider
G= 1 kN/m
H= 10 kNm
Solution:
Support reactions. Determine the reactions at A and C.
Cy = kN
Ay = kN

A point of contraflexure in a structure is the point where the bending moment changes signs from
positive to negative (and vice versa). Knowing the place of the contraflexure is especially useful when
designing reinforced concrete or structural steel beams and also for designing bridges. Flexural
reinforcement may be reduced at this point.
The point of zero moment, x1 = m

Question : Draw the shear and moment diagrams for the beam. (Answer in 4 s.f or more)

Lets consider
G= 30 kNm
F= 10 kN
Solution:
Support reactions. Determine the reactions at A and C.
Cy = kN
Ay = kN

Shear Diagram. The end points x = 0, V = + Ay. The distibuted loading on the beam is positive yet
increasing. At x = 0 the slope begins at 0 and goes to -4 at x = 8 m. Since the loading is linear, th
diagram is parabola having a negatively increasing slope.

The point of zero shear can be found by using the method of sections for the beam segment of len

We require that V = 0, so that

Moment Diagram. From the shear diagram V is positive but decreases from Ay at x = 0 to ______ at
x = 8 m. The curve of the moment diagram having this behavior is a cubic function of x.

The maximum moment is at x1, since dM/dx = V = 0 at this point. From the FBD, we have
