Lab 9.4 Password Recovery Procedure on a Catalyst 2900 Series Switch

Objective
.Create and verify a basic switch configuration •
.Change passwords and use the password recovery procedure •

Step 1 Preparation
Install the physical connection needed for the network topology shown above. You will need
one straight though cable to connect your PC to the switch's fa0/1 interface, and a console
cable for switch management. Then start a hyper terminal session

Step 2 Configure the switch


Configure the hostname, access and privilege mode passwords, as well as the m anagement
LAN settings:

Hostname Enable secret Console Telnet VLAN 1 IP


password password password address

PX_SW cisco con telnet 192.168.1.2

Step 3 Change all passwords & reload the switch

This step will be performed by the instructor

Step 4 Recover access to the switch


.a. Make sure that a PC is connected to the console port and a HyperTerminal window is open
b. Turn the switch off. Turn it back on while holding down the “MODE” button on the front
of the switch at the same time that the switch is powered on. Release the “MODE” button
.after the STAT LED goes out
:c. The following output should be displayed

d. To initialize the file system and finish loading the operating system enter the following
:commands
flash_init
load_helper
:dir flash

.e. Type rename flash:config.text flash:config.old to rename the configuration file


.This file contains the password definition

Step 5 Restart the system


a. Type boot to boot the system.
b. Enter N at the following prompt to start the Setup program:
Continue with the configuration dialog? [yes/no] : N
c. Type rename flash:config.old flash:config.text to rename the configuration file with its
.original name at the Privileged EXEC mode prompt

:d. Change the old unknown passwords as follows
