INSTRUCTION DIVISION
FIRST SEMESTER 2023-2024
Course Handout (Part-II)
Date: 12/08/2023
In addition to part I (General handout for all courses appended to the timetable) this portion gives
further details regarding the course.

Course Number : PHY F313

Course Title : Computational physics
Instructor-in-Charge : Chandradew Sharma

Text Book:
1. A first course in computational physics, Paul L. DeVries & Javier E. Hasburn, 1st ed,
Jones and Bartlett

Reference Book:
1. Pick up any other book on numerical analysis from library to gain greater depth on the
math of numerical techniques.

Numerical techniques using computers have led to powerful methods to solve problems. It is
difficult to find solutions to many problems using analytical techniques. Numerical techniques
come to our rescue to solve many of these problems. Success of these techniques is often limited
only by the speed of computers. Advent of computers together with numerical techniques have
also led to discovery of phenomena that would otherwise have never taken place.

In this course, we will

 Learn numerical methods to find roots, to carry out interpolation, to calculate
integrals, to find solutions of ordinary differential equations, and partial
differential equations.
 Apply these methods to solve physics problems
 Write computer codes ( in Python/Matlab) to implement various methods.
 Carry out experiments with codes for getting to the bottom of the physics of a
problems

Every week there will be three lectures (12-12.50 pm) and one tutorial (5-5.50 pm) in C 307
