INTERVIEW REPORT

Interviewee's name: Professor Eveling Herrera

Interviewers' names: - Emily Espinoza

- Neddys Lindo
- Marcela García

Interview's purpose: To know and learn about Professor Eveling's teaching philosophy and
experience.

- Interviewer: Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Professor: Teacher Eveling is a very humble person. I am trying to be patient, I wasn't the kind of
person who has patience but with time I have learned to have patience. I have been studying for
many times, I have some specialties, I think it's helping me to grow even with the practices I
have with my students 'cause in the classroom is where you really know if you are a teacher or
not.

- Interviewer: Why did choose to become a teacher?

Professor: I think this is one of my preferences I had when I was young, I think being a teacher
have a lot of advantages that I didn't realize, I just thought that being a teacher is just come to
class and teach any lesson but this is not, this is more than that, and so before teaching a lesson
you have to be well prepared so it means that you are growing not only professional but
mentally with knowledge.

- Interviewer: What do you enjoy the most about teaching?

Professor: To see my students growing, I think that is the best part because that's the way I
know that the process of teaching-learning is developing in a good way, and it is really
important to be focused on what students are learning.

- Interviewer: For you what are the three most important qualities for an EFL teacher to
posses?
Professor: First of all, to be well trained, to have experience and to have some types of portraits.
Not all teachers have the ability to teach, some of them are teaching because they got the
degree, they are not like being able to be a teacher, so we have to be well prepared and also
have some methodologies to be a good teacher.

- Interviewer: Could you describe your approach to lesson planning?

Professor: In a holistic way the first thing I do is to analyze the “microprogramación” which is
the general program for the components I teach and after that I have to plan my lesson plan
calendar so I have to develop all the activities that I'm going to teach during the whole semester
and together with this I start planning my lesson plan so what I do is, first of all, to use the
material or resources I have to use and then to consider the students' qualities so I can see if I
have to adapt my plan according to the mood of the students at the moment. So I start with the
most simple thing to the most complex and I also take into account the extra material I use in
which help me to reinforce what I'm teaching in the classroom.

- Interviewer: What strategies do you use to engage the students in the classroom?
Professor: The first one that I use is the ice breaker and the warm up activity because when you
are in the classroom some students are like bored or sleepy so the teacher have the role of
make them be dynamic and awake up, so ice breaker help the students to be activated in the
class and then I try to combine different types of activities in order to teach each exercise from
the material plan lesson.

- Interviewer: How do you establish and maintain a positive classroom environment?

Professor: Well, one of the roles that the teacher have is to be friendly, having a good wrap up
with the students and also a good relationship with them, you can make some jokes or even try
to talk with different students about their difficulties or problems they are facing, perhaps, if
possible. In this way you are not only giving them instructions but also relating with them,
which helps us to build up and have a good classroom environment.

- Interviewer: What challenges have you faced in your teaching career?

Professor: I think it is classroom management. I am the person or teacher that I don't like to be
like very strict, so if the students like to be at the border or in front or wherever they want to be
placed in the classroon for me it's like anyway, but I think this is not good because in this way
the students are not paying attention but I'm trying to fight against this difficulty I face. I think
this is my weakness.

- Interviewer: How do you stay updated with the advancements and changes in the field
of English language teaching?
Professor: Usually, I try to participate in online word chats, and I remember the last one was like
getting a master program, because it was very difficult, it was long but I think I learned a lot
from it, and also when I talk with my co-workers because everybody can share the different
experiences that we have.

- Interviewer: Could you share with us a memorablee teaching experience?

Professor: I remember that I was with my students from bussines administration, they received
classes the whole day, from 7 to 5 and mine was the last session, so the students were very
tired, they were like sleepy and so I told them we were going to do an activity so that they could
awake and they didn't want, but after I started doing the activity they were more enthusiastic
and I liked the way they were practicing, they were even laughing and after doing that they
were motivated to continue studying even though they were tired, so I think that it is very
important that the teachers have to be very optimistic, dynamic and motivate students
within the classroom.
Conclusion
