Introduction

On-the-job training (OJT) is a fundamental component of workforce

development that plays a crucial role in preparing individuals for success in their

chosen careers. This form of training involves learning and acquiring skills directly

within the workplace environment, allowing individuals to gain practical experience

and hands-on knowledge that is essential for performing job tasks effectively. As the

global economy evolves and industries become more competitive, the importance of

on-the-job training in equipping individuals with the necessary skills and

competencies to thrive in the workforce has become increasingly evident. One of the

key aspects of on-the-job training is its focus on practical application and experiential

learning. Unlike traditional classroom-based training programs, OJT provides

individuals with the opportunity to learn through direct engagement with job duties,

tasks, and responsibilities. This hands-on approach allows trainees to apply theoretical

knowledge to real-world situations, develop problem-solving skills, and gain a deeper

understanding of the intricacies of their roles. By actively participating in day-to-day

operations and projects, individuals can enhance their skills, build confidence, and

improve their overall performance.

Moreover, on-the-job training is often tailored to meet the specific needs and

requirements of the job and the organization. Employers can customize training

programs to align with the unique goals, objectives, and culture of their workplace,

ensuring that employees receive relevant and targeted learning experiences. By

focusing on job-specific competencies and skills, OJT programs can effectively

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

address skill gaps, enhance job performance, and support career advancement

opportunities for employees. Another significant benefit of on-the-job training is its

ability to foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development within

organizations. By investing in the training and development of their employees,

organizations demonstrate a commitment to employee growth and success. OJT

programs not only help employees acquire new skills but also encourage a mindset of

lifelong learning, adaptability, and innovation. Through ongoing training initiatives,

organizations can cultivate a skilled and motivated workforce that is equipped to meet

the evolving demands of the marketplace.

Furthermore, on-the-job training can have a positive impact on employee

engagement, job satisfaction, and retention. When employees receive opportunities

for growth and development within the workplace, they are more likely to feel valued,

motivated, and committed to their roles. OJT programs that provide clear pathways

for career advancement and skill enhancement can boost employee morale,

productivity, and loyalty. By investing in the professional growth of their employees,

organizations can create a supportive and inclusive work environment that fosters

employee well-being and long-term success.

On April 15, 2024 is when they were deployed in the City of Vigan, City

Agriculture Office. Before the City Agriculture Office was under the Department of

Agriculture, it was only in 1998 when it was transferred to the city mayor. The City

Agriculture Office goal is for the farmers to have a higher yield to encourage others to

start farming, with this they may secure food stability in the city. Through this goal
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

they are conducting meetings of farmers which they called “farmers’ meeting” so they

can raise their concern as well as check for the machineries which the city provides as

well as information dissemination regarding the distribution of farm inputs. The

agriculture office has a demonstration farm located in Cabaroan, Vigan City. In this

place, they conduct experiments such effectiveness of a certain brand of fertilizer and

comparison to other brands. In this place, they also tried the solar water irrigation

which will be installed in farmers land areas to aid them. The agriculture office has

been conducting different programs to take care of farmers and fisherfolk as they

believe that this sector is very important because they provide people food as per one

of their goals is to increase food production.

Unlike other municipality where their farmers are thousand, in Vigan City

there are only a few this because the guidelines are that only one per family can be a

registered farmer or fisherman, this is to avoid conflicts in the distribution of aids and

farm inputs. They can only register during January to April of the year.

Moreover, farmers can also insure their plants, livestock, and fishes so that

whenever there’ll will be a calamity and their crop, or livestock is affected destroyed

or harmed they will be receiving an aid so that they will not loss their profit. Also,

they are offering free seeds to the citizens of Vigan for backyard gardening. This is

also their way to encourage people to plant not only to ensure that there is food in the

table but to help the environment as well.

Narrative Report

This section discusses and narrates my daily and monthly activities as

well as accomplishments.

My First Encounter. It was April 15, 2024 when we are deployed in

the City Hall of Vigan Ilocos Sur. I can still remember how nervous I am. It

was then announced that I will be joining the City Agriculture Office. At first,

I was hesitant as political science is somehow not-so-related in agriculture.

Hence, I just thought that politics is everything.

Things are not so easy on me at first, the terms, the process, and such

are very new to me because I lack knowledge regarding agriculture, unlike

my other classmate who have been very attentive and excited whenever they

are talking about programs of agriculture as his father is a fisherman.

Our supervisor, the city agriculturist explained to us that most of their

work are field work as their works requires them to visit the farm for testing

fertilizers, pesticides and other farm inputs as part of the program of the

department.

Part of knowing the agency is knowing its field of works so they tour us

on the demo Farm in Cabaraoan, Vigan City. There, they are testing the solar

water irrigation that later on will be installed in the land area of chosen

farmers. They also have a land area which they are preparing for testing of a

certain brand of fertilizers. In this land area, with the help of voluntary
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

farmers they’d be able to conduct an experiment testing and comparing the

effectivity of a certain fertilizer, seeds, pesticides, and other farm inputs.

After the demo farm we went to San Juan, Ilocos Sur to visit the research

center wherein they submitted some documents.

It was an exhausting day yet an exciting one. We get to know how their

works revolve; I get to have idea on how our OJT will be.

Learning. On-the-job training (OJT) is an invaluable facet of

education, bridging the gap between theory and practice by immersing

students in real-world work environments. While traditional classroom

learning equips students with foundational knowledge, OJT offers a unique

opportunity to cultivate practical skills, foster professional growth, and imbue

learners with invaluable insights. This essay explores the multifaceted

learning experiences that students can gain from on-the-job training,

elucidating its profound impact on their personal and professional

development.

One of the most tangible benefits of on-the-job training is the

acquisition of practical skills relevant to the chosen field of study. Unlike

classroom learning, which often relies on hypothetical scenarios, OJT exposes

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

students to authentic workplace challenges and tasks. Whether mastering

technical competencies, honing communication abilities, or refining problem-

solving acumen, students engage in hands-on learning that fortifies their skill

set and enhances employability.

OJT embodies the principles of experiential learning, wherein students

actively engage with real-world situations to construct knowledge and

understanding. By navigating diverse work environments, students develop

adaptability and resilience in the face of uncertainty. They learn to pivot

swiftly, troubleshoot effectively, and innovate creatively, thereby preparing

for the dynamic demands of the modern workforce.

Central to the ethos of on-the-job training is mentorship, wherein

seasoned professionals serve as guides and mentors to aspiring learners.

Through meaningful interactions with mentors, students glean invaluable

insights, tap into industry wisdom, and cultivate professional networks.

Mentorship fosters not only skill transfer but also character development,

instilling in students the values of integrity, diligence, and ethical conduct.

Beyond technical proficiency, on-the-job training exposes students to

the intricacies of organizational culture and dynamics. By immersing

themselves in the day-to-day operations of a workplace, students gain

firsthand exposure to corporate norms, values, and protocols. They learn to

navigate office politics, forge interpersonal connections, and leverage

institutional resources, thereby sharpening their organizational acumen and

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

interpersonal finesse.

On-the-job training serves as a crucible for personal growth and self-

reflection, prompting students to confront their strengths, weaknesses, and

areas for improvement. Through experiential learning and feedback

mechanisms, students cultivate self-awareness, resilience, and a growth

mindset. They embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, embrace

feedback as a catalyst for improvement, and embark on a journey of

continuous self-improvement.

On-the-job training represents a transformative educational paradigm

that transcends traditional classroom boundaries. Through practical skill

acquisition, experiential learning, mentorship, cultural immersion, and

personal growth, students emerge from OJT equipped with not only technical

proficiency but also the resilience, adaptability, and professionalism requisite

for success in the ever-evolving landscape of work. As educators and

employers alike recognize the immense value of OJT, it behooves us to

champion experiential learning as a cornerstone of holistic education,

empowering students to thrive as lifelong learners and conscientious

contributors to society.

Conclusion. On-the-job training (OJT) stands as a cornerstone in the realm of

education, offering students an immersive learning experience that transcends the

confines of traditional classrooms. Its significance extends beyond individual skill

acquisition to encompass broader benefits for both students and universities alike. This
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

essay elucidates the pivotal role of on-the-job training in shaping the educational

landscape, enhancing student outcomes, and advancing institutional excellence.

At the heart of on-the-job training lies its transformative impact on student learning

outcomes. Unlike conventional classroom instruction, OJT empowers students to apply

theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts, thereby reinforcing understanding and

fostering practical skill development. By engaging in hands-on experiences, students

cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving prowess, and adaptability—attributes that are

indispensable in navigating the complexities of contemporary careers.

In an era characterized by rapid technological advancements and evolving industry

landscapes, the acquisition of industry-relevant skills assumes paramount importance.

On-the-job training serves as a conduit for bridging the gap between academia and

industry, equipping students with the competencies and proficiencies demanded by

employers. Through exposure to authentic workplace settings, students gain insights into

industry practices, norms, and expectations, thereby enhancing their employability and

career readiness.

Beyond technical competencies, on-the-job training fosters the development of

professionalism and work ethic among students. Immersed in professional environments,

students glean firsthand exposure to workplace etiquette, communication protocols, and

ethical standards. They learn to collaborate effectively, communicate articulately, and

demonstrate accountability—qualities that are instrumental not only in securing

employment but also in fostering long-term career success.

The symbiotic relationship between universities and industry partners forms the
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

bedrock of effective on-the-job training programs. Collaborative endeavors facilitate

knowledge exchange, resource sharing, and the co-creation of meaningful learning

experiences. By forging partnerships with industry stakeholders, universities enrich the

educational landscape, augment student opportunities, and remain at the forefront of

innovation and best practices.

On-the-job training instills in students a culture of lifelong learning and continuous

improvement—a mindset that transcends the confines of formal education. By embracing

new challenges, seeking feedback, and adapting to evolving circumstances, students

embark on a journey of self-discovery and professional growth. OJT serves as a catalyst

for personal development, empowering students to navigate career trajectories with

confidence and resilience.

On-the-job training emerges as a linchpin in fostering student success and

advancing institutional excellence within the higher education ecosystem. Through its

myriad benefits, OJT not only enriches student learning outcomes but also fortifies the

symbiotic relationship between universities and industry partners. As educators and

stakeholders champion the importance of experiential learning, it is imperative to

prioritize and invest in robust on-the-job training initiatives. By doing so, we pave the way

for a future wherein students emerge as agile, competent, and socially responsible

professionals, poised to make meaningful contributions to society and thrive in the ever-

evolving landscape of work.

The importance of on-the-job training cannot be overstated in today's

educational landscape and dynamic workforce. As a bridge between theory

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

and practice, OJT offers students invaluable opportunities for practical skill

acquisition, experiential learning, mentorship, cultural immersion, and

personal growth. By immersing students in authentic work environments,

OJT equips them with the competencies, adaptability, and professionalism

essential for success in their chosen fields. Moreover, OJT fosters a culture of

lifelong learning, empowering individuals to thrive amidst uncertainty,

embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and continuously evolve as

professionals. As educators, employers, and policymakers recognize the

transformative potential of OJT, it is imperative to prioritize and invest in

experiential learning initiatives, thereby nurturing a workforce that is not only

technically proficient but also agile, resilient, and poised for success in the

ever-evolving landscape of work.
