Success criteria: I can say the agencies concerned with youth wellbeing.

This simply talks about the government and private (non-governmental) agencies which are concerned or in charge
of promoting the well-being of youth. This means they want young people to be happy and healthy in Nigeria.

Some of these agencies are

Boy scout: this agency is set up to develop young boys to be responsible.

The Girl Guides Association: develops young girls to become responsible leaders.

Drug free club: this agency discourages young people and children from using or getting involved with drugs.

National Sports Commission

Values necessary for well- being of the youth includes;
Discipline: this ensures that young people do what they are supposed to do at all time. They do their homework and
house chores before they play.
Honesty: honesty means not telling lies or taking things which do not belong to you.
Hard work: being hardworking will ensure your success in everything that you do. If you study hard, do your chores
well and read widely, when you become an adult, it will be easy to continue being hardworking.
Respect and concern for others: if you respect your elders, you will benefit from their good advice. Concern for
others means being considerate.
Obedience: this value is important because it keeps us out of trouble. If you obey your parents, you will stay out of
trouble, and if you obey the law will not get punished of fined.
Healthy living: the value of healthy living is that you will stay away from things which are not good for you, such as
too many sweets and chocolates which will rot your teeth.

Learning Objectives:
To understand the meaning and types of drugs.
To explore the health impact of using drugs.
Success criteria: I can explain the meaning of drug abuse and the health impact of using drugs.

Drug abuse is when a person uses drugs which have not been prescribed by a doctor and he or she gets addicted to
them. An addiction is when a person cannot do without something. Addiction is a type of illness. The drugs people
usually get addicted to are bad for them and sometimes make them commit crimes.

There are two ways people can come in contact with drugs, which are the proper and wrong way.

The proper way: is when someone gets drugs from a hospital or doctor to help them feel better when they are sick.
Some drugs that can be given to a sick person includes: pain killer or sleeping tablets to help them relax and relieve
pain. These tablets are some of the prescription drugs people can get addicted to.
The wrong way: this is when a person is not sick but gets drugs from a friend, brother or sister to make them feel
happy or feel good about themselves.
Health impact of using drugs

Every drug has it’s specific characteristics which affect people differently. Some of the harmful effects of taking
drugs or abusing substances include:

Addiction: addiction to any drugs or harmful substances makes it impossible for a person to function normally. It
gets worst when the person is deprived of the substance they are addicted to, this makes the sick, and have
symptoms like throwing up or shivering and unable to focus. This is called ‘withdrawal’. It is what makes it so hard
for addicts to give up their addiction.

Violence: drug addicts sometimes become violet because they have no control over their actions and because they
feel deprived of their drugs.
Death: this is when too much of the drug has been consumed and it causes the heart or major organs to stop which
leads to death.

Family Disintegration: the use of drug can cause the user to be anti-social and he or she may become erratic and
sometimes violet. This causes them to leave their homes and sometimes live on the streets or with other drug
users.

Poverty: once a person gets addicted to a drug his or her behaviour changes which may lead to lose of job and
after that the person tends to use all his or her savings on drugs or even begin to steal people’s money to support
his or her drug habit.

the social and economic impact of using drugs.

Inability to focus: due to the disorientation and hallucinations caused by the drugs the users find it difficult to
look after themselves. This means that they often look unclean and unkept.

Dropping out of school: due to lack of concentration, they cannot cope with school and they usually drop out of
school.
Disorientation and nausea: some drugs makes some users weak, unfocused and nauseous ( which is when a person
feels like vomiting). cannabis and hemp can cause disorientation.

factories into the air,
