How to Generate a Mesh Quality Report in CFD-

Post
Description:
The “checkQuality.cse” macro file can be used to output several useful values relating to mesh quality
into result files and a CFD-Post table.

Solution:
Load the macro into CFD-Post through the Calculators tab > Macro Calculator > Click on the folder icon
and select the cse file.

The mesh statistics that are generated in the result file include: number of Nodes, Elements, Tetrahedra,
Wedges, Pyramids, and Hexahedra mesh. In addition, the max and min values of the connectivity
number, element volume ratio, maximum face angle, minimum face angle, and edge length ratio are also
produced. Note: There is maximum and a minimum face angle for each node in the mesh, and the max
and min of these two respective data sets are what is being presented in the results file.

The GUI, as shown in Figure 1, allows you to select “Above Value” or “Below Value” for each statistic as
well as the limiting value. This is used to automatically generate an isovolume for each statistic, showing

only regions of the mesh that satisfy the specified conditions. The generated isovolumes can be viewed
by toggling their visibility under the Outline tab > User Locations and Plots.
After clicking on Calculate, the macro will retrieve and compile the statistics into a result file named
“checkQuality.txt” in the working directory. In addition, a report table named “Mesh Quality” will be
available for viewing inside CFD-Post. This table has a local copy named “MeshQualityTable.csv” and
contains the same information as the text file.
