2018-19 S5 Mathematics Final Examination Paper I Solutions

18.
(a) Let r be the radius of C.
Area of C = 20
r2 = 20
r2 = 20
r = 20
∴ The equation of C is
(x – 4)2 + (y – 2)2 = ( 20) 2
x2 – 8x + 16 + y2 – 4y + 4 = 20
x2 + y2 – 8x – 4y = 0

(b) The equation of L is y = x + k.

 x 2 + y 2 − 8 x − 4 y = 0 .......... .....(1)

 y = x + k .......... .......... .......... ....(2)
Substitute (2) into (1).
x2 + (x + k)2 – 8x – 4(x + k) = 0
x + x2 + 2kx + k2 – 8x – 4x – 4k = 0

2x2 + (2k – 12)x + k2 – 4k = 0

(b) Alternative method:

The equation of L is y = x + k.
Suppose straight line L1 passes through the centre of C and is perpendicular to L.
Slope of L1  slope of L = –1
Slope of L1  1 = –1
Slope of L1 = –1
The equation of L1 is
y – 2 = –(x – 4)
y=6–x
L1 passes through the mid-point of AB.
 y = 6 − x .......... .......... .......... ...(1)

 y = x + k .......... .......... .......... ...(2)
Substitute (2) into (1).
x+k=6–x
2x = 6 – k

Join PE.
CAP = CQP (s in the same segment)
∵ The two circles are of equal radii.
∴ CAP : CQP = CP : PE (Arc and  at circumference in prop.)
1:1 = CP : PE
PE = CP
∴ PE = PC (equal arcs, equal chords)

(b) APQ = QDR ext. , cyclic quad.

ACQ = APQ s in the same segment
∴ ACQ = QDR
∴ R, C, Q and D are concyclic. ext.  = int. opp. 

(c) ∵ R, C, Q and D are concyclic.

∴ CQD + CRD = 180 (opp. ∠s, cyclic quad.)
CQD + 80 = 180
CQD = 100
PDQ + PCQ + CQD = 180 (∠ sum of △)
∵ PDQ = PCQ
1
∴ PDQ = (180 − 100)
2
= 40º
∵ PD = DQ
∴ ∠DQP = ∠DPQ (base ∠s, isos. △)
DQP + DPQ + PDQ = 180 (∠ sum of △)
1
∴ DQP = (180 − 40)
2
= 70º
∴ CQP = CQD − DQP
= 100 − 70
= 30
