Writing Practice

The document discusses whether young children should be allowed to own smartphones, with some arguing they should not due to risks of addiction, exposure to inappropriate content, and missing out on learning from experiences, while others say smartphones help keep in touch and set limits can reduce risks, so a balanced approach is best.

Writing practice – Independent task

Prompt: Some parents forbid young children from owning smartphones (cell phones with Internet
access), while others disagree and believe they are important tools for keeping in touch. Which
point of view do you think is better, and why?

I think that parents should not allow young children to own a smartphone; maybe kids below 10
years old because children are supposed to explore the world and discover things but thanks to
the internet, they don’t have the chance to learn on their own they don’t even get the chance to
make mistakes. Also, parents sometimes can’t control what they watch on the internet, causing
them to be abusive with other kids and maybe disrespecting older people (not always, but it can
happen. And it is also related to the content they watch). In social media they will have access to
literally everything and some of this content isn’t for kids. Lastly, there is a chance that young
children will get addicted to their smartphones.
On the other hand, nowadays, everyone has a smartphone and maybe your kids will be left out
because everyone has a smartphone except for them. I suggest that small children be given a
phone, but only to facilitate communication in case the parents are out somewhere. For example,
parents who go out to work and leave their children alone, or when a parent leaves their child at
their friend's house. It is also important to set limits on screen time and be aware of what they see
on the internet. It is important for parents to tell their children what is good and what is not, as
well as what they can see and what is better not to see.
In conclusion, children should have a cell phone, but with the condition of being careful and
setting limits on screen time. Balancing it with outdoor activities or other types of activities to be
able to socialize without allowing them to skip the childhood stage.
