support and guidance so that he/ she will be able to supply other words or expressions
that complete an analogy.

Title: Supplying Other Words or Expressions that

Complete an Analogy

Analogy is a relationship or a comparison between words. It is a comparison

of two different things to show their similarities. Here is an example:

young : old :: implicit : explicit

In an analogy, the single colon ( : ) means "is to" and the double colon ( : : )
stands for the word "as." Thus, the example above is read "young is to old as implicit
is to explicit."

Now, take a look at the given pictures and analyze the relationship of each:

loud : noisy :: tug: pull

6
WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP?
Both words have similar meanings so their relationship is a synonym.

1. Synonym
A synonym shows two things that have the same meaning.

Here are some examples:

find : locate :: lose : misplace

(find is related to locate in the same way that lose is related to misplace)

strong : sturdy :: great : wonderful

(strong is to sturdy as great is to wonderful)

closed : open :: curly : straight

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP?

Both words have opposite meanings, so their relationship is an antonym.

2. Antonym
An antonym shows two things that are opposites.

7
Here are some examples:

kind : cruel :: happy : sad

(kind is opposite of cruel in the same way that happy is opposite of sad)

hate : love :: despise : value

(hate is to love as despise is to value)

child : family :: student : class

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP?

A child is a part of a family just as a student is a part of a class.

3. Part/ Whole
A part/ whole relationship shows two things connected. One is a
part of the other.

Here are some examples:

chapter : novel :: stanza : poem

(chapter is a part of a novel in the same way that stanza is a part of a poem)

volume : encyclopedia :: word : sentence

(volume is to encyclopedia as word is to sentence)

8
effort : success :: sleep : energy
WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP?

One word results in or leads to a corresponding consequence. One thing leads to

or causes another.
An effort can cause success in the same way that sleep can cause energy.

4. Cause / Effect
A cause explains WHY something happened while an effect
explains the RESULT.

Here are some examples:

sanitation : prevention of diseases :: heavy rain : flood

(prevention of diseases is a possible effect of sanitation in the same way that
flood is a possible effect of a heavy rain)

carelessness : errors :: honesty : trust

(carelessness is to errors as honesty is to trust)

9
friend : kind :: hero : brave

WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP?

One word describes the other or tells its qualities or traits.

5. Characteristics/ Quality
People and things are usually described by their special qualities,
or characteristics.

Here are some examples:

factual : article :: fictitious : fable

(factual is a characteristic of an article just as fictitious is a characteristic of a
fable)
Father : loving :: God : merciful
(Father is to loving as God is to merciful)
Here are other types of analogy with examples:

6. Degree warm : hot :: cold : freezing

7. Tool/ Worker pen : writer :: instrument : musician
