Temperature
1.0 MPa
Entropy
Using the T-s chart
Example #1.
What is the temperature of the saturated steam whose pressure is 1.0 MPaa?
Step 2: Intersect the pressure line
. (GREEN)
with the saturated steam curve (RED). With
this, the intersection point will be a steam
condition whose pressure is 1.0 MPa and
saturated steam.
Step 3:
From the point of
intersection.,
project a Point of intersection
horizontal line to 178oC
the right for the Temperature
temperature. This
is found to be
approximately
178oC. Though,
this depends on
how clear you can
approximate its
value. The key here
is to be as accurate Entropy
as possible.
Using the T-s chart
Example #2.
What is the entropy of the steam whose pressure is 0.4 MPa and temperature is 420oC?
Solution .
Step 1: Locate the pressure line (green) for
0.4 MPa. All pressure lines are very close to
parallel to 1.0 MPa pressure line. One tip is
to trace the 1.0 MPa first then project a
parallel curve for the 0.4 MPa. However, for
the trained eye, this may not necessary
anymore.
Step 2:
Trace the
temperature line
for 420oC shown as Temperature
Step 3:
From the point of intersection, project a vertical line (yellow)
downward for the entropy. This is found to be approximately 7.95
kJ/kg-K.

Self-Assessment:
Answer the following questions. Use exactly the recommended steam tables book.
1) What does it mean by steam quality?
2) What is the quality of saturated steam if it has a pressure 0.98 MPa? How about 2.35 MPa?
3) What is the quality of saturated liquid if it has a temperature of 209oC? How about 197.3oC?
4) What is the formula for calculating the steam quality on a mass basis?
5) What is the pressure and entropy of the saturated steam if it has a temperature of 340oC?
6) What is the temperature of the water substance if it has an pressure of 0.8 MPa and an entropy of 6.75 kJ/kg-
K? What is the state of the water substance?
7) What is the pressure of the water substance if it has a temperature of 250oC and an entropy of 8 kJ/kg-K?
What is the state of the water substance?
