Meaning
Renaissance is a French word meaning “rebirth.” It refers to a period in European
civilization that was marked by a revival of Classical learning and wisdom.It was a
complex transitional movement that took place in Europe between the 14th and 17th
centuries. It stressed rational thinking and humanism.During the Renaissance, many
developments took place in literature, art, architecture, science, and technology. It
marked the beginning of the modern era in Europe.

Crusades
In many ways Crusades of the 11th and 12th centuries played a direct part in
bringing about the Renaissance. In general, the Crusades weakened the feudal
system. Since the feudal lords were busy fighting the Crusades,the kings gained
power.Individual monarchs became more powerful and national states came into
existence.These new monarchs challenged the authority of the pope and the
church which claimed supreme position.
Growth of Trade
The crusades also helped growth of trade between the west and the East large
towns with wealthy merchant class and professionals like lawyers doctors and
teachers came into existence the middle class patronised education cultural
activities and intellectual pursuits emergence of schools and universities all over
Europe in spreading the Renaissance These new centres of learning that was free
from the control of the church encouraged the spirit of progress that brought in
The Renaissance.
Fall of Constantinople
After the fall of the Roman empire constantinople became the centre of classical
learning its libraries had stored important manuscripts of the Greek and Latin
Scholars the turks captured constantinople in 1453 ce . many Greek scholars
migrated to Italy they carried with them rare Greek and Roman manuscript these
Greek scholars begin teaching in Italian universities and created a new urge for
learning this was one of the reasons why Renaissance was so strong
Encouragement to Art and Learning
Renaissance spread to various sections of society .Kings, merchants, Princes and
even the Pope patronised and encouraged art architecture and learning even
certain families encouraged cultural activities the most famous Italian family of
Medici patronised Michelangelo.
Impact
One of the most important aspects of literature in the Renaissance was the use of
local languages. Writers now began to focus on humanist themes in literature.The
Renaissance marked the beginning of modern sciences. Earlier, the theories upheld
by the Church were alone considered true. The scientists of the Renaissance period
believed that all views The Arabs spread the knowledge of Algebra and Indian
numerals to the West. Stevin advocated the system of coins, weights, and
measures. on science should be based on observation and experimentation.The
Renaissance led to the development of a scientific outlook and rational spirit
among the people. People now began to follow only those theories and principles
which were based on observation, experimentation, and rationalism.The
Renaissance paved the way for the beginning of the Reformation in England and
Europe.
