REGULATIONS FOR
UNDER GRADUATE DEGREE COURSES
UNDER CBCS PATTERN
1.1 Definitions:
Programme : “Programme” means a course of study leading to the award of a degree in a
discipline.
Course : “Course” refers to a paper / practical / subject offered under the degree
programme. Each Course is to be designed variously under lectures / tutorials / laboratory or
field work / seminar / practical training / Assignments / Term paper or Report writing etc.,
to meet effective teaching and learning needs.
Part I : Part I comprises of only ONE category namely Tamil / Other languages.
Tamil/other languages” offered under Part I of the programme. This comprises of
four courses with TWO credits each (4x3= 12 credits) from 1st to 4th semesters.
Part III: Part III comprises of THREE categories namely, Core Courses and Elective Generic /
Discipline Specific / Individual (or) Group Project.
i) Core Courses
The Core Courses” related to the programme concerned including practical offered
under Part III of the programme.
iii) Project
The Individual / Group Project related to the core courses of the programme
concerned, offered under Part III of the programme.
Part IV: Part IV comprises of FIVE categories namely, Skill Enhancement Course, Skill
Enhancement Course (Foundation Course), Skill Enhancement Course (Entrepreneurial Skill),
Extension Activity, Environmental Studies, Value Education, Internship (or) Industrial Visit
(or) Field Visit.
Part V : Part V comprises of only ONE category namely Professional Competency Skill.
The courses offered as skill based course under Part V of the programme is aimed at
Professionalism and to Demonstrate Integrity through work ethics, personal
accountability, professional image, and ethical behavior with 2 credit each (1x2= 2
credits) in the 6th semester
A detailed explanation of the above with relevant credits are given under “Scheme of
Examination along with Distribution of Marks and Credits”
1.2. Duration:
This means the stipulated years of study to complete a programme as prescribed by the
University from time to time. Currently for the undergraduate programme the duration of
study is THREE years. These regulations shall apply to the regular course of study in
University departments and approved institutions of the University.
1.3. Credits:
The weightage given to each course of study (subject) by the experts of the Board of Studies
concerned.
The term ‘Credit’ refers to the weightage given to a course, usually in
relation to the instructional hours assigned to it. For instance, a six hour
course per week is assigned 6/5/4 credits, a five hour course per week is
assigned 5/4/3 credits and a four hour course per week is given 4/3/2
credits. However, in no instance the credits of a course can be greater than
the hours allotted to it. The total minimum credits, required for completing
a UG program is 140.
Credit System:
The course of study under this regulation, where weightage of credits are spread over to
different semesters during the period of study and the Cumulative Grade Point Average shall
be awarded based on the credits earned by the students. A total of 140 credits are prescribed
for the Undergraduate Programme offered in three years.
1.4. Choice Based:
All Undergraduate Programmes offered by the University shall be under Choice Based Credit
System. OBE/LOCF methods are included in this system.

*Part I. II, and Part III components will be separately taken into account for CGPA
calculation and classification for the under graduate programme and the other
components. IV, V have to be completed during the duration of the programme as per
the norms, to be eligible for obtaining the UG degree.
Extension Activities:
Proper relevant records shall be maintained by the respective departments and if necessary it
may be verified by the university authority at any time. The extension activities shall be
conducted outside the regular working hours of the college. The mark sheet shall carry the
gradation relevant to the marks awarded to the candidates. This grading shall be
incorporated in the mark sheet to be issued at the end of the semester for which students
shall pay fee for one theory paper.
The marks shall be sent to the Controller of Examinations before the commencement of the
final semester examinations.
Provided that it shall be open to the Syndicate, or any authority delegated with such powers
by the Syndicate, to grant exemption to a candidate who has failed to earn 75% of the
attendance in theory as well as in practicals, prescribed, for valid reasons, subject to usual
conditions.
b) A candidate who has secured more than 65% and less than 75% of attendance in any
semester separately for theory and practical’s, shall be permitted to take the examination on
the recommendations of the Head of the Institution to condone the lack of attendance on the
payment of prescribed fee to the University, separately for theory and practical’s.
c) A candidate who has secured less than 65% attendance in any semester in theory as well as
in practical is NOT ELIGIBLE for condonation of shortage attendance and such student will not
be allowed to proceed to the next semester and to complete the programme of study. Such
student shall have to repeat the semester, which they have missed by Re-do after completion
of final semester of the course, paying the fee for the break of study as prescribed by the
University from time to time. However, it is left to the discretion of the respective colleges
to derive a befitting methodology (seminar, test, assignment etc.) to record the
compensation of lack of attendance in the form of special attendance outside the business
hours and then allow the students to pay the prescribed fees and to write the examination.
Separate attendance register shall be maintained in theory as well as practical, for
compensating the shortage of attendance. During the hours of compensation of attendance,
the candidate shall not be given attendance for the regular semester classes. At any time,
the university authorities may scrutinize these records to ensure implementation of these
rules and regulations in the interest of the students.
d) In case of medical emergencies the candidate who has secured less than 65% but not less
than 55% should have medical proof for being hospitalized atleast for four days.
e) A candidate who has secured less than 65% of attendance in the final semester separately
for theory and practicals, has to compensate his/her attendance shortage in a manner as
decided by the concerned Head of the department, after getting prior approval of the
University. The candidate shall be permitted to rejoin in the 6th semester, after completing
his/her regular 3 year course.
4. SCHEME OF EXAMINATION
Any theory examination is conducted only for 3 hours irrespective of total marks allotted for
the examinations.
i. There shall be theory examinations at the end of each semester, for odd semesters in
the month of October / November; for even semesters in April / May. However, there
shall be practical examinations at the end of even semesters in general, with
exceptions in a few courses as prescribed by the Boards of studies, concerned. A
candidate who does not pass the examination in any course(s) shall be permitted to
appear in such failed course(s) in the subsequent examinations to be held in October /
November or April / May.
ii. All candidates admitted in first year, should compulsorily get registered for the first
semester examination. If registration is not possible owing to any reason including
shortage of attendance less than 55%, beyond Condonation limit or on medical
grounds, the candidates are permitted to rejoin the course in the next year.
iii. The results of all the examinations will be published through the institution where the
student underwent the course as well as through the University Website. In case of
private candidature, the result will be published through the Centers in which they
took the examinations as well as through the University Website.
8. PASSING MINIMUM
a) A candidate shall be declared to have passed the whole examination, if the candidate
passes in all the theory papers and practicals wherever prescribed as per the scheme of
examinations by earning 140 credits in Part I, II, III, IV and V. He / She shall also fulfill the
extension activity prescribed by earning ONE credit to qualify for the degree.
b) A candidate should get not less than 40% in the University (external) Examination,
compulsorily, in any course of Part I, II, III & IV papers. Also the candidate who secures not
less than 40% marks in the external as well as internal (CIA) examinations put together in any
course of Part I, II, III & IV shall be declared to have successfully passed the examination in
the concerned subject in theory as well as Practicals. There shall be no passing minimum for
the CIA, (zero to 25 for theory and zero to 40 for practicals). The candidate who absents
himself for CIA programmes, after a repeated chance, will be awarded zero mark in the
concerned subject.
9. INSTANT EXAMINATION:
Instant Examinations is conducted for the students who appeared in the final semester
examinations. Eligible criteria for appearing in the Instant Examinations are as follows:
a) Eligibility: A Student who is having arrear in only one theory paper in the current final
semester examination of the UG degree programme alone is eligible to appear for the
Instant Examinations.
b) Non-eligibility for more than one arrear paper: A student who is having more than one
arrear paper at the time of publication of results is not eligible to appear for the
Instant Examinations.
c) Non-eligibility for arrear in other semester: Student having arrear in any other
semester is not eligible and a student who fails to appear for the final semester
examination is also not eligible for appearing for the Instant Examinations and those
Student who have arrears in Practical /Project are not eligible for the Instant
Examinations.
d) Non-eligibility for course completion: Students who have completed their Program
duration but having arrears are not eligible to appear for Instant Examinations.
12. DISTRIBUTION
Table - 1(A): The following are the distribution of marks for external and internal for
University (external) examination and continuous internal assessment and passing minimum
marks for theory papers of UG programmes.

13. GRADING:
Once the marks of the CIA and end-semester examinations for each of the course are
available, they shall be added. The mark thus obtained shall then be converted to the
relevant letter grade, grade point as per the details given below:

a. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-III subjects in the first
appearance within the prescribed duration of the UG programmes and secured a
CGPA of 9 to 10 and equivalent grade “O” in part III comprising Core, Electives and
Allied subjects shall be placed in the category of “First Class – Outstanding”.
b. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-III subjects in the first
appearance within the prescribed duration of the UG programmes and secured a
CGPA of 7.5 to 9 and equivalent grades “D” or “D+” in part III comprising Core,
Electives and Allied subjects shall be placed in the category of “First Class with
Distinction”.
c. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-I, Part-II and Part-III
subjects of the UG programmes and secured a CGPA of 6 to 7.5 and equivalent
grades “A” or “A+” shall be declared to have passed that parts in “First Class”.
d. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-I, Part-II and Part-III
subjects of the UG programmes and secured a CGPA of 5.5 to 6 and equivalent
grade “B” shall be declared to have passed that parts in “Second Class”.
e. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-I, Part-II and Part-III
subjects of the UG programmes and secured a CGPA of 4.5 to 5 and equivalent
grade “C” shall be declared to have passed that parts in “Third Class”.
f. There shall be no classifications of final results, for Part IV and Part V, however,
those parts shall be awarded with final grades in the end semester statements of
marks and in the consolidated statement of marks.
g. Grade in Part V Extension Activities shall not be taken into account for
classification.
iii. has successfully completed the prescribed Internship (or) Industrial Visit (or) Field
Visit etc., as evidenced by certificate issued by the Principal of the College.
17. RANKING:
a. A candidate who qualifies for the UG degree course passing all the examinations in the
first attempt, within the minimum period prescribed for the course of study from the
date of admission to the course and secures I or II class shall be eligible for ranking and
such ranking shall be confined to 10 % of the total number of candidates qualified in that
particular branch of study, subject to a maximum of 10 ranks.
b. In the case of candidates who pass all the examinations prescribed for the course with a
break in the first appearance due to the reasons as furnished in the Regulations 3 (a) (iii)
supra are eligible for classification / Distinction.
c. The marks obtained in improvement examinations shall not be taken into consideration
for ranking.

As prescribed in the University Application for affiliation.
20. SYLLABUS
The syllabus for various courses shall be clearly demarcated into five viable units in each
paper/subject.
Programme outcome, objectives, outcomes, course outcome and programme
outcome mappings, list of text books, list of reference books, online course materials
shall be given to each paper.
b) “Candidates who fail in any of the course of Part I, II, III, IV & V of UG degree
examinations shall complete the course concerned within 6 years from the date of
admission to the said programme, and should they fail to do so, they shall take the
examination in the texts/revised syllabus prescribed for the immediate next batch of
candidates. If there is no change in the texts/syllabus they shall appear for the
examination in that course with the syllabus in vogue until there is a change in the
texts or syllabus. In the event change of nomenclature of a previous course and
change of Regulations and / or curriculum after 6 year period, the candidates shall
have to take up an equivalent course in the revised syllabus as suggested by the
Chairman of respective Boards of Studies and fulfill the requirements as per the
regulation curriculum for the award of the degree.
c) This transitory provision will be available till April 2028 for the students of the old
regulation admitted in 2022-2023. Thereafter, they will be permitted for the
examination only under the Regulations in force.

3. B.A. ENGLISH
Candidates seeking admission to the first year of the UG Degree Course should have passed
the Higher Secondary Course Examination (Academic or Vocational), conducted by the Govt.
of Tamilnadu with English as a subject or an Examination of any other University accepted as
equivalent thereto by the Syndicate subject to such other conditions as may be prescribed.
Such candidates shall be permitted to take the B.A. Degree Examination of this University
after the completion of the Course of three Academic Years in this University / Colleges
affiliated to this University and shall qualify for the B.A. Degree.
4. B.A. ARABIC
Candidates for admission to the first year of the UG Degree course shall be required to have
passed the Higher Secondary Course Examination (Academic or Vocational) conducted by the
Govt. of Tamilnadu or any other Examination accepted as equivalent thereto by the Syndicate
subject to such other conditions as may be prescribed.
5. B.A. ECONOMICS
Candidates for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Economics shall be required to have passed
the Higher Secondary Examination (10 + 2 year Academic or Vocational Stream) conducted by
the Government of Tamilnadu or an Examination accepted as equivalent thereto by the
Syndicate subject to conditions as may be prescribed. Candidates may be admitted to the
Course of study who took the following subjects under Part III of their Higher Secondary
Course in the following order of priority:

Candidates for admission to the first year of the UG Degree course shall be required to have
passed the Higher Secondary Course Examination (Academic or Vocational) conducted by the
Govt. of Tamilnadu or any other Examination accepted as equivalent thereto by the Syndicate
subject to such other conditions as may be prescribed.
12. B.COM.
Candidates for admission to the first year of the Bachelor of Commerce Degree Course shall
be required to have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (Academic or Vocational
Stream) conducted by the Government of Tamilnadu or an Examination accepted as
equivalent thereto by the Syndicate subject to such other conditions as may be prescribed.
13. B.COM. (CORPORATE SECRETARYSHIP)
Candidates for admission to the first year of the UG Degree Course shall be required to have
passed the Higher Secondary Examination (Academic or Vocational) conducted by the
Government of Tamilnadu or any other Examination accepted as equivalent thereto by the
Syndicate subject to such conditions as may be prescribed.
16. B.B.A.
Candidates for admission to the first year of the Bachelor of Business Administration full-time
Degree Course shall be required to have passed the Higher Secondary Course Examination
(Academic or Vocational) conducted by the Government of Tamilnadu or an Examination
accepted as equivalent thereto by the Syndicate subject to such conditions as may be
prescribed
36. B.C.A.
Candidate seeking admission to the first year of the UG Degree Course should have passed the
Higher Secondary Course Examination (Academic or Vocational) Conducted by the Govt. of
Tamilnadu with Mathematics / Business Mathematics / Statistics / Computer Science /
Commerce / Accountancy as a subject or any other Examination accepted as equivalent
thereto by the Syndicate subject to such other conditions as may be prescribed. Such
candidates shall be permitted to take the B.C.A. Degree Examination of this University after
the completion of the Course of three Academic Years in this University / Colleges affiliated
to this University and shall qualify for the B.C.A. Degree.
