REGULATIONS FOR
UNDER GRADUATE DEGREE COURSES
UNDER CBCS PATTERN

Effective from 2023-2024


1. OVERVIEW ON CBCS SYSTEM

1.1 Definitions:
Programme : “Programme” means a course of study leading to the award of a degree in a
discipline.
Course : “Course” refers to a paper / practical / subject offered under the degree
programme. Each Course is to be designed variously under lectures / tutorials / laboratory or
field work / seminar / practical training / Assignments / Term paper or Report writing etc.,
to meet effective teaching and learning needs.

Part I : Part I comprises of only ONE category namely Tamil / Other languages.
Tamil/other languages” offered under Part I of the programme. This comprises of
four courses with TWO credits each (4x3= 12 credits) from 1st to 4th semesters.

Part II: Part II comprises of ONE category namely English.


English” language offered under Part II of the programme. This comprises of four
courses with TWO credits each (4x3= 12 credits) from 1st to 4th semesters.

Part III: Part III comprises of THREE categories namely, Core Courses and Elective Generic /
Discipline Specific / Individual (or) Group Project.

i) Core Courses
The Core Courses” related to the programme concerned including practical offered
under Part III of the programme.

ii) Elective Generic / Discipline Specific


Elective courses” related to the core courses of the programme concerned, offered
under Part III of the programme.

iii) Project
The Individual / Group Project related to the core courses of the programme
concerned, offered under Part III of the programme.

Part IV: Part IV comprises of FIVE categories namely, Skill Enhancement Course, Skill
Enhancement Course (Foundation Course), Skill Enhancement Course (Entrepreneurial Skill),
Extension Activity, Environmental Studies, Value Education, Internship (or) Industrial Visit
(or) Field Visit.

(i): Skill Enhancement Course


The courses offered as skill based courses under Part IV of the programme is aimed at
imparting advanced skill”. This comprises of four courses with TWO credits each (6x2=
2 credits) from 1st to 4th semesters

(ii): Skill Enhancement Course (Foundation Course)


The courses offered as foundation course under Part IV of the programme is aimed at
instilling confidence among students with TWO credits each (2x1= 2 credits) in the
1st semester.

(iii): Skill Enhancement Course (Entrepreneurial Skill)


The courses offered as entrepreneurial skill under Part IV of the programme is aimed
at improving entrepreneurial skill with ONE credit (1x1=1 credits) in the 3rd semester.
(iv): Extension Activity
All those activities under NSS/NCC/Sports/YRC programme and other co / extra-
curricular activities offered under part IV of the programme is part of the Extension
Activities with one credit (1x1=1 credits) in the 6th semester.

(v): Environmental Studies


The courses offered as foundation course under Part IV of the programme is aimed to
figure out a more sustainable way of living. This comprises of two courses in 3rd
semester without any credit and one in 4th semester with TWO credits (2x1= 2 credits)

(vi): Value Education


The courses offered as foundation course under Part IV of the programme is aimed at
foundation establishing value courses with 2 credits each (2x1= 2 credits) in 5th
semester

(vii): Internship (or) Industrial Visit (or) Field Visit


The course offered as skill based courses under Part IV of the programme is aimed at
equipped with essential skills to make them employable with 2 credits each (1x2= 2
credits) in the 6th semester.

Part V : Part V comprises of only ONE category namely Professional Competency Skill.
The courses offered as skill based course under Part V of the programme is aimed at
Professionalism and to Demonstrate Integrity through work ethics, personal
accountability, professional image, and ethical behavior with 2 credit each (1x2= 2
credits) in the 6th semester

A detailed explanation of the above with relevant credits are given under “Scheme of
Examination along with Distribution of Marks and Credits”

1.2. Duration:
This means the stipulated years of study to complete a programme as prescribed by the
University from time to time. Currently for the undergraduate programme the duration of
study is THREE years. These regulations shall apply to the regular course of study in
University departments and approved institutions of the University.

1.3. Credits:
The weightage given to each course of study (subject) by the experts of the Board of Studies
concerned.
The term ‘Credit’ refers to the weightage given to a course, usually in
relation to the instructional hours assigned to it. For instance, a six hour
course per week is assigned 6/5/4 credits, a five hour course per week is
assigned 5/4/3 credits and a four hour course per week is given 4/3/2
credits. However, in no instance the credits of a course can be greater than
the hours allotted to it. The total minimum credits, required for completing
a UG program is 140.

Credit System:
The course of study under this regulation, where weightage of credits are spread over to
different semesters during the period of study and the Cumulative Grade Point Average shall
be awarded based on the credits earned by the students. A total of 140 credits are prescribed
for the Undergraduate Programme offered in three years.
1.4. Choice Based:
All Undergraduate Programmes offered by the University shall be under Choice Based Credit
System. OBE/LOCF methods are included in this system.

2. CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS):


This is to enhance the quality and mobility of the students within and between the
Universities in the country and abroad.

2.1 Eligibility for Admission to the Course


Candidate for admission to the first year of the UG degree programme shall be required to
have passed the higher secondary examination (Academic or Vocational) conducted by the
Govt. of Tamil Nadu in the relevant subjects or other examinations accepted as equivalent
thereto by the Syndicate, subject to such other conditions as may be prescribed thereof, by
the Government of Tamilnadu from time to time.

2.2. Duration of the Course


The course shall extend over a period of three years comprising of six semesters with two
semesters in one academic year. There shall not be less than 90 working days for each
semester. Examination shall be conducted at the end of every semester for the respective
subjects.
Each semester has 90 working days consisting of 5 teaching hours per working day. Thus, each
semester has 450 teaching hours and the whole programme has 2700 teaching hours.

2.3. Course of Study


The course of study for the UG degree courses of all branches shall consist of the following:

*Part I. II, and Part III components will be separately taken into account for CGPA
calculation and classification for the under graduate programme and the other
components. IV, V have to be completed during the duration of the programme as per
the norms, to be eligible for obtaining the UG degree.

Extension Activities:
Proper relevant records shall be maintained by the respective departments and if necessary it
may be verified by the university authority at any time. The extension activities shall be
conducted outside the regular working hours of the college. The mark sheet shall carry the
gradation relevant to the marks awarded to the candidates. This grading shall be
incorporated in the mark sheet to be issued at the end of the semester for which students
shall pay fee for one theory paper.
The marks shall be sent to the Controller of Examinations before the commencement of the
final semester examinations.

Marks to be awarded as follows:


 20% of marks for Regularity of attendance.
 60% of marks for Active Participation in classes/camps/games/special
Camps/programmes in the college/ District / State/ University activities.
 10% of marks for Exemplary awards/Certificates/Prizes.
 10% of marks for Other Social components such as Blood Donations, Fine Arts, etc.

3. REQUIREMENT TO APPEAR FOR THE EXAMINATIONS


a) A candidate shall be permitted to appear for the university examinations for any semester
(theory as well as practical) only if
i. He/she secures not less than 75% of attendance in theory as well as in practical’s
(separate attendance registers shall be maintained for theory and practical’s) in the
number of working days during the semester.
ii. In the case of married woman candidates the minimum attendance requirement due
to maternity shall be not less than 55% of the total instructional days in theory as well
as in practical’s.
iii. He/she earns a progress certificate from the Head of the institution, of having
satisfactorily completed the course of study prescribed in the scheme of examinations
for that semester as required by these regulations.
iv. His/her conduct should be satisfactory.

Provided that it shall be open to the Syndicate, or any authority delegated with such powers
by the Syndicate, to grant exemption to a candidate who has failed to earn 75% of the
attendance in theory as well as in practicals, prescribed, for valid reasons, subject to usual
conditions.

b) A candidate who has secured more than 65% and less than 75% of attendance in any
semester separately for theory and practical’s, shall be permitted to take the examination on
the recommendations of the Head of the Institution to condone the lack of attendance on the
payment of prescribed fee to the University, separately for theory and practical’s.

c) A candidate who has secured less than 65% attendance in any semester in theory as well as
in practical is NOT ELIGIBLE for condonation of shortage attendance and such student will not
be allowed to proceed to the next semester and to complete the programme of study. Such
student shall have to repeat the semester, which they have missed by Re-do after completion
of final semester of the course, paying the fee for the break of study as prescribed by the
University from time to time. However, it is left to the discretion of the respective colleges
to derive a befitting methodology (seminar, test, assignment etc.) to record the
compensation of lack of attendance in the form of special attendance outside the business
hours and then allow the students to pay the prescribed fees and to write the examination.
Separate attendance register shall be maintained in theory as well as practical, for
compensating the shortage of attendance. During the hours of compensation of attendance,
the candidate shall not be given attendance for the regular semester classes. At any time,
the university authorities may scrutinize these records to ensure implementation of these
rules and regulations in the interest of the students.

d) In case of medical emergencies the candidate who has secured less than 65% but not less
than 55% should have medical proof for being hospitalized atleast for four days.

e) A candidate who has secured less than 65% of attendance in the final semester separately
for theory and practicals, has to compensate his/her attendance shortage in a manner as
decided by the concerned Head of the department, after getting prior approval of the
University. The candidate shall be permitted to rejoin in the 6th semester, after completing
his/her regular 3 year course.

4. SCHEME OF EXAMINATION
Any theory examination is conducted only for 3 hours irrespective of total marks allotted for
the examinations.
i. There shall be theory examinations at the end of each semester, for odd semesters in
the month of October / November; for even semesters in April / May. However, there
shall be practical examinations at the end of even semesters in general, with
exceptions in a few courses as prescribed by the Boards of studies, concerned. A
candidate who does not pass the examination in any course(s) shall be permitted to
appear in such failed course(s) in the subsequent examinations to be held in October /
November or April / May.
ii. All candidates admitted in first year, should compulsorily get registered for the first
semester examination. If registration is not possible owing to any reason including
shortage of attendance less than 55%, beyond Condonation limit or on medical
grounds, the candidates are permitted to rejoin the course in the next year.
iii. The results of all the examinations will be published through the institution where the
student underwent the course as well as through the University Website. In case of
private candidature, the result will be published through the Centers in which they
took the examinations as well as through the University Website.

5. RESTRICTIONS TO APPEAR FOR THE EXAMINATIONS


Any candidate having arrear paper(s) shall have the option to appear in any arrear paper
along with the regular semester papers, in theory as well as in practicals, as long as the
transitory provision is applicable.

6. MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION AND EXAMINATIONS


The medium of instruction and examinations for the courses of Part I & II shall be the
language concerned. For part III & Part IV courses, the medium of instruction shall be either
Tamil or English and the medium of examinations is English / Tamil irrespective of the
medium of instructions.

7. SUBMISSION OF RECORD NOTE BOOKS FOR PRACTICAL EXAMINATIONS


Candidates appearing for practical examinations should submit bonafide Record Note Books
prescribed for practical examinations, otherwise the candidates shall not be permitted to
appear for the practical examinations. However in genuine cases where the students could
not submit the Record Note Books, candidates shall be permitted to take up the practical
examination, provided the Head of the Department concerned, ‘certifies’ that the candidate
has performed and completed the experiments, prescribed for the course on the basis of the
observation note book signed by the class teachers, concerned, submitted by the candidate.
For such candidates who do not submit record note books “zero mark” will be awarded for
the record note books in the practical examinations.

8. PASSING MINIMUM
a) A candidate shall be declared to have passed the whole examination, if the candidate
passes in all the theory papers and practicals wherever prescribed as per the scheme of
examinations by earning 140 credits in Part I, II, III, IV and V. He / She shall also fulfill the
extension activity prescribed by earning ONE credit to qualify for the degree.
b) A candidate should get not less than 40% in the University (external) Examination,
compulsorily, in any course of Part I, II, III & IV papers. Also the candidate who secures not
less than 40% marks in the external as well as internal (CIA) examinations put together in any
course of Part I, II, III & IV shall be declared to have successfully passed the examination in
the concerned subject in theory as well as Practicals. There shall be no passing minimum for
the CIA, (zero to 25 for theory and zero to 40 for practicals). The candidate who absents
himself for CIA programmes, after a repeated chance, will be awarded zero mark in the
concerned subject.

9. INSTANT EXAMINATION:
Instant Examinations is conducted for the students who appeared in the final semester
examinations. Eligible criteria for appearing in the Instant Examinations are as follows:

a) Eligibility: A Student who is having arrear in only one theory paper in the current final
semester examination of the UG degree programme alone is eligible to appear for the
Instant Examinations.

b) Non-eligibility for more than one arrear paper: A student who is having more than one
arrear paper at the time of publication of results is not eligible to appear for the
Instant Examinations.

c) Non-eligibility for arrear in other semester: Student having arrear in any other
semester is not eligible and a student who fails to appear for the final semester
examination is also not eligible for appearing for the Instant Examinations and those
Student who have arrears in Practical /Project are not eligible for the Instant
Examinations.

d) Non-eligibility for course completion: Students who have completed their Program
duration but having arrears are not eligible to appear for Instant Examinations.

11. REVALUATION AND PHOTOCOPY OF THE ANSWER SCRIPTS:


Revaluation: All current batch Students who have appeared for their Semester Examinations
are eligible for Revaluation of their answer scripts. Passed out candidates are not eligible for
Revaluation.
Photocopy of the answer scripts: Students who have applied for revaluation can collect their
answer scripts from the respective colleges after seven days from the date of publication of
the results.

12. DISTRIBUTION

13. GRADING:
Once the marks of the CIA and end-semester examinations for each of the course are
available, they shall be added. The mark thus obtained shall then be converted to the
relevant letter grade, grade point as per the details given below:

Internal Assessment System:


1. The following teaching, learning and evolution process may be brought under internal
assessment system. Interested teachers can choose one or more innovative methods.
a. Book review and research paper review, syllabus and curriculum review.
b. Data collection and paper writing practices: books level, field study level. Using the
course content for society and nature development – exercise.
c. Workshops, preparing technical term dictionaries from text books and reference
books.
d. Preparing question paper by the candidates: objective type, descriptive type, training
given by the teacher
e. Forming digital library: collecting text and reference books, course material.
f. Preparing course material.
g. Following eminent intellectuals and research institutions in global level.
h. Open book examination
i. For application oriented study: Villages, Institutions, various people groups may be
adopted by the departments of the colleges for practicing their theoretical study.
Innovative methods may be implemented in the practices and report can be written
for documentation, further discussion and research.
j. Extracurricular activities may be framed through their syllabus content.
k. Grouping students for self discussion, self learning and self evaluation process.

14. CLASSIFICATION OF SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES


A candidate who passes all the examinations in Part I to Part V securing following CGPA and
Grades shall be declared as follows for Part I or Part II or Part III:

a. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-III subjects in the first
appearance within the prescribed duration of the UG programmes and secured a
CGPA of 9 to 10 and equivalent grade “O” in part III comprising Core, Electives and
Allied subjects shall be placed in the category of “First Class – Outstanding”.
b. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-III subjects in the first
appearance within the prescribed duration of the UG programmes and secured a
CGPA of 7.5 to 9 and equivalent grades “D” or “D+” in part III comprising Core,
Electives and Allied subjects shall be placed in the category of “First Class with
Distinction”.
c. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-I, Part-II and Part-III
subjects of the UG programmes and secured a CGPA of 6 to 7.5 and equivalent
grades “A” or “A+” shall be declared to have passed that parts in “First Class”.
d. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-I, Part-II and Part-III
subjects of the UG programmes and secured a CGPA of 5.5 to 6 and equivalent
grade “B” shall be declared to have passed that parts in “Second Class”.
e. A candidate who has passed all the examination in Part-I, Part-II and Part-III
subjects of the UG programmes and secured a CGPA of 4.5 to 5 and equivalent
grade “C” shall be declared to have passed that parts in “Third Class”.
f. There shall be no classifications of final results, for Part IV and Part V, however,
those parts shall be awarded with final grades in the end semester statements of
marks and in the consolidated statement of marks.
g. Grade in Part V Extension Activities shall not be taken into account for
classification.

16. CONFERMENT OF THE DEGREE:


No candidate shall be eligible for conferment of the Degree unless the candidate:
i. has undergone the prescribed course of study for a period of not less than six semesters
in an institution approved by/affiliated to the University or has been exempted from in
the manner prescribed and has passed the examinations as have been prescribed
therefor.
ii. has completed all the components prescribed under Part I to Part V in the CBCS pattern
to earn 140 credits.

iii. has successfully completed the prescribed Internship (or) Industrial Visit (or) Field
Visit etc., as evidenced by certificate issued by the Principal of the College.

17. RANKING:
a. A candidate who qualifies for the UG degree course passing all the examinations in the
first attempt, within the minimum period prescribed for the course of study from the
date of admission to the course and secures I or II class shall be eligible for ranking and
such ranking shall be confined to 10 % of the total number of candidates qualified in that
particular branch of study, subject to a maximum of 10 ranks.
b. In the case of candidates who pass all the examinations prescribed for the course with a
break in the first appearance due to the reasons as furnished in the Regulations 3 (a) (iii)
supra are eligible for classification / Distinction.
c. The marks obtained in improvement examinations shall not be taken into consideration
for ranking.

18. CONCESSIONS FOR DIFFERENTLY-ABLED STUDENTS


18.1 Dyslexia students: For students who are mentally disabled, learning disability and
mental retardation, who are slow learners, who are mentally impaired having learning
disorder and seizure and students who are spastic and those who have cerebral Palsy,
the following concessions shall be granted:
a) Part I Foundation course Tamil or any other Language can be exempted.
b) One-third of the time of paper may be given as extra time in the examination
c) Leniency in overlooking spelling mistakes, and
d) Amanuensis for all courses provided the request is duly certified by the Medical Board
of the Government Hospital / General Hospital / District headquarters Hospitals and
they shall be declared qualified for the degree if they pass the other examinations
prescribed for the degree.
18.2 Hearing, Speaking Impaired & mentally retarded:
For students whose are hearing and speaking is impaired and who are mentally
challenged, One Language paper either Part 1 Foundation course Tamil or any other
Language or Part II English or its equivalent can be exempted.

18.3 Visually Challenged Students:


A scribe shall be arranged by the College and the scribe be paid as per the respective
institution in which he/she is admitted.

16. GRIEVANCE REDRESSAL COMMITTEE


The College shall form a Grievance Redressal Committee for each course in each department
with the Course Teacher as the member and the HOD as the convener. This Committee shall
solve all grievances relating to the Internal Assessment marks of the students.

17. EVENING COLLEGE:


The above regulations shall be applicable for candidates undergoing the respective courses in
Evening College / Shift-II.
18. CHECKLIST FOR INSPECTION:
a) Qualification for
i) Teaching Faculty: As prescribed by the UGC.
a) A teacher with the specific qualifications prescribed by UGC, appointed in a
particular Discipline, is eligible to handle classes in that particular subject only
and also to act as an examiner in theory and practical for that subject only.
This is applicable to programmes / courses, got converted and approved by the
Syndicate.

b) A teacher with the specific qualifications prescribed by UGC, appointed in a


particular Discipline, is not eligible to handle classes in other subjects and also
is not eligible to act as an examiner in theory and practical for other subjects.

ii) Technical Faculty: As prescribed by the UGC

b) Infrastructure Facilities:
As prescribed in the University Application for affiliation.

19. QUESTION PAPER PATTERN


The following question paper patterns shall be followed for CBCS pattern syllabi for the
candidates admitted from the academic year 2020-2021 onwards.
External Maximum 75 Marks – wherever applicable (Ext.75 + Int.25 = Total. 100)
10 questions – 2
Section A Very short answer questions 10X 2=20
from each unit
Short answer questions of either / or 5 questions – 1
Section B 5X5=25
type (like 1a (or) 1b) from each unit
Essay-type questions / Problem 5 questions – 1

( Answer any 3 out of 5) from each unit

20. SYLLABUS
The syllabus for various courses shall be clearly demarcated into five viable units in each
paper/subject.
Programme outcome, objectives, outcomes, course outcome and programme
outcome mappings, list of text books, list of reference books, online course materials
shall be given to each paper.

21. REVISION OF REGULATIONS AND CURRICULUM


The above Regulation and Scheme of Examinations shall be in vogue without any change for a
minimum period of three years from the date of approval by the Syndicate. The University
may revise/amend/change the Regulations and Scheme of Examinations, only once in 3 years,
if found necessary.

22. TRANSITORY PROVISION


a) Any candidate having arrear paper(s) shall have the option to appear in any arrear
paper along with the regular semester papers.

b) “Candidates who fail in any of the course of Part I, II, III, IV & V of UG degree
examinations shall complete the course concerned within 6 years from the date of
admission to the said programme, and should they fail to do so, they shall take the
examination in the texts/revised syllabus prescribed for the immediate next batch of
candidates. If there is no change in the texts/syllabus they shall appear for the
examination in that course with the syllabus in vogue until there is a change in the
texts or syllabus. In the event change of nomenclature of a previous course and
change of Regulations and / or curriculum after 6 year period, the candidates shall
have to take up an equivalent course in the revised syllabus as suggested by the
Chairman of respective Boards of Studies and fulfill the requirements as per the
regulation curriculum for the award of the degree.

c) This transitory provision will be available till April 2028 for the students of the old
regulation admitted in 2022-2023. Thereafter, they will be permitted for the
examination only under the Regulations in force.

be required to have passed the Higher Secondary Examinations (Academic or Vocational
stream) conducted by the Government of Tamilnadu with Mathematics as a subject of study
or an Examination accepted as equivalent thereof by the Syndicate of Thiruvalluvar University
subject to such other conditions as may be prescribed.
