Question 1 (19 marks)

1.1 When a polynomial f ( x ) = x 4 − 2 x3 + 3x 2 − ax + b is divided by ( x − 1) and ( x + 1) , the


remainders are 5 and 19, respectively. Find the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏 and hence find the
remainder when f ( x ) is divided by ( x − 3) . (6)

1.2 Find the equation of the parabola touching the 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠 at 2 and passing through the
point ( 0; − 1) . (5)

1.3 The consecutive terms of an A.P are ln 2, ln ( 2 x −1) , ln ( 2 x + 3) , Determine the exact
value of 𝑥. (8)

Question 2 (31 marks)

2.1 Given that p = log a 4 and q = log a 5 , express log a 0.4 in terms of 𝑝 and 𝑞. (3)

2.2 Solve for 𝑦 in terms of 𝑎 and 𝑏 in the equation: 2 + log a b + 3log a y = 2log a ( a 2 y ) . (4)

2.3 Solve the simultaneous equations: log 2 ( x 2 y ) = 2 and 11 + log 2 y = 3log 2 x .
