MAJ 18- Principle and Strategies in Teaching Mathematics

Prepared by: Kharla F. Alferez

I. Objectives
At the end of the discussion, 80% of the students will be able to:
a) Determine the conditions that make a quadrilateral a parallelogram
b) Identify if the quadrilaterals is a parallelogram using the given conditions, and
c) Appreciate the importance of quadrilaterals in real life.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Conditions that make a quadrilateral a parallelogram

Methodology Teacher Activity Student’s Activity

Preparation A. Preliminary Activities
(3 minutes) 1. Greetings and Prayer

Good Morning class! Good morning ma’am! We are glad to see

you.

Please remain standing for our prayer. (Student start the prayer)

How are you feeling today? We’re good ma’am

2. Checking the Attendance

Who is absent in class today? None, ma’am

Ok! Very good!

3. Setting of Class Standards

Before we proceed to our lesson, let’s

have our classroom rules.
Kindly read everyone. (Students will read the classroom
agreements)

1. Listen attentively when the teacher is

talking.
2. Raise your hand if you want to
answer.
3. Participate in every activity.
4. Unusual movement must be avoided.

Thank you! I hope this classroom

agreements will be observed entire
discussion.
Engage Before we proceed to our discussion, do
(15 minutes) you still remember our lesson about Yes ma’am
quadrilaterals?

Let me see if you still really remember.

I will call a students or you may raise your
hand to answer in the board. Here’s the
instructions put an X in the box if the
shape always exhibits the property.

It seems you learn from our previous

lessons.

Again, what is quadrilaterals, Cabataña? Cabataña: is a polygon that has 4 sides and 4
corners.

Very good, give ourselves good job clap. (Students clapping)

Explore “Now, let’s procced to our next topic”

(3 minutes)
Our topic for today is all about “The
condition that makes the quadrilaterals
a parallelogram”

Here’s a question, what makes a

quadrilateral a parallelogram? Let’s find
out as we go over to our lesson.

But before we proceed, let’s read the

objectives first.
Clariño, kindly read. Clariño:
At the end of the discussion, 80% of the
students will be able to:
a) determine the conditions that make a
quadrilateral a parallelogram
b) Identify if the quadrilaterals is a
parallelogram using the given
conditions, and
c) Appreciate the importance of
quadrilaterals in real life.

Ok! I hope that we will achieve this set of

objectives at the end of the discussion.
Explain When we say parallelogram is a
(15 minutes ) quadrilateral where both pairs of opposite
sides are parallel and congruent.

Illustration 1

In quadrilateral MATH, MA || HT and

MH || AT. MA congruent HT and MH
congruent AT. Therefore, MATH is
parallelogram.

In illustration 1 what makes MATH a

parallelogram, Solidad?
Solidad: the opposite side are parallel and
Very good, Solidad. congruent.

The quadrilaterals MATH makes

parallelogram because their opposite sides
are parallel and congruent.

Let’s have another example illustration 2.

In quadrilateral BEST, angle B is

congruent to angle S and angle E is
congruent to angle T. Then BEST is
parallelogram.

In illustration 2 what makes BEST a

parallelogram, Dionsay? Dionsay: they are congruent to each sides.

Ok! The quadrilaterals BEST is

parallelogram because the opposite angles
are congruent. If any quadrilaterals are
congruent it is parallelogram because if
they are congruent they are parallel to
each other. Understood? Yes ma’am

Let’s use two column proof. We have the

given and we have prove it.
In two column proof we have the
statement and the reason. We have the
statement and we need to find the reason.

We have number 1 , draw line BS, as we

can see from the figure, line BS is two
distinct points determine a line, so we
have the reason for number 1.
Understood? Yes ma’am

Number 2, line ES is congruent to line TB

and line ES parallel to line TB and this
from the given so the reason is the given.
Gets? Yes ma’am

Let’s proceed number 3 angle 1 is

congruent to angle 2. Then we have the
reason ,If two parallel lines cut by a
transversal, then the two alternate interior
angles are congruent. Understood? Yes ma’am

We have number 4 line BS is congruent to

line SB. We have the reason, they are
reflexive property. Reflexive property
means they are equal to itself.

Number 5, ∆BES is congruent to ∆STB.

The reason is SAS congruence postulate.
From the figure we can see the ∆BES is
side angle side congruence postulate.
Understood? Yes ma’am

Number 6 angle 3 is congruent to angle 4.

The reason is CPCTC. What is CPCTC
stands for, Lariosa? Lariosa: CPCTC stands for corresponding
parts of congruent triangles are congruent.

Very good, Lariosa,

CPCTC stands for corresponding parts of

congruent triangles are congruent. As we
can see from the figure that angle 3 is a
corresponding parts of the triangle of
angle 4. Understood? Yes ma’am
Let’s proceed number 7 line EB is parallel
to line ST. We have the reason , if two
lines are cut by a transversal so that
alternate interior angles are congruent,
then the lines are parallel. I’m I correct ? Yes ma’am

We have the last number 8 quadrilateral

BEST is a parallelogram. The reason of
this is the definition of parallelogram.
What is the definition of parallelogram,
Hapsan? Hapsan: is quadrilateral where both pairs of
opposite sides are parallel and congruent.

Very good Hapsan, so did you really Yes ma’am

understand the topic class?

Ok! Let’s have an activity!

Elaborate This activity called “ answer me”
(20 minutes)
You will be group into 2 groups. Instead
counting numbers just say quadrilaterals
and parallelogram. I’m I clear? Yes, ma’am

The group quadrilaterals on the right side

and the group parallelogram on the left
side, you may now proceed to your
respective area silently.

This activity you must collaborate to your

group members and this only one item but
it’s equivalent to 20 points, in every
wrong answer minus 3 points. I will give
you ten minutes to answer. Is that clear? Yes ma’am

Everybody got the correct answer, give (Students clapping)

ourselves a good clap

You did a good job everyone, any None ma’am

questions?

Okay, let’s have a quiz.

Evaluate Quiz Time!
(6 minutes) Instructions: Answer the following
questions below. I will give you 6 minutes
to answer.

The railing braces form the diagonals of a

parallelogram.

Answer key:
1. The opposite sides of a 1. congruent
parallelogram are ____________. 2. Bisect each other
2. The diagonals of a parallelogram 3. They are supplementary
always _____________ 4. C
3. What can you say about the 5. 80°
consecutive angles of a
parallelogram?
4. Which is not a property of a
parallelogram?
a) Diagonals bisect each other.
b) Both pairs of opposite sides are
parallel.
c) Diagonals are always congruent.
d) Both pairs of opposite angles are
congruent.
5. If one angle of a parallelogram
measures 100°, what is the
measure of the angle consecutive
to it?

Assignment:

Instruction: Answer the following statements below. Put in a short bond paper.

Quadrilateral DEFG is a parallelogram. Uses its properties in completing the table.
