Obituaries

Former UN General Secretary Kofi Annan passes away.

He had served as seventh Secretary-General of UN for two terms reigning from 1997
till 2006. He was first black African to become Secretary-General of UN and also the
first to be elected from UN staff itself. He was born on 8 April 1938 in Kumasi, Gold
Coast (now Ghana).

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee passes away

He was Prime Minister thrice in 1996 (13 days), 1998-1999 and 1999-2004 (making
him first non-Congress leader to have completed full term as Prime Minister).
He was born on 25th December 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
He was awarded the India’s highest civilian honour ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 2015. His
birthday is celebrated as Good Governance Day (GGD) by the Central Government
since 2014 to foster awareness among the people of accountability in government. His
poetry collection is released in his book Meri Ekyaavan Kavitayein (My 51 Poems).

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee passed away.

Kunwar Bai: 106-year-old icon for Swachh Bharat campaign passes away.
She was recognised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for building toilet by selling off
her 8-10 goats to build two toilets at her home.

India’s Green Revolution pioneer Dr Gurcharan Singh Kalkat passes away

He was known for his role in bringing Green Revolution and several exemplary
agricultural reforms in Punjab. His contribution had ensured overall development and
a phenomenal growth in the agriculture sector.

Lalji Singh: Father of DNA fingerprinting in India passes away

eminent scientist and father of DNA fingerprinting in India Lalji Singh passed away
following heart attack.

The well-known theater, film personality and ad film maker who passed away on 17
November 2018: Alyque Padamsee

Stan Lee, Co-Creator of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Passes Away

American comic-book writer and Marvel Comics co-creator Stan Lee passed away
aged 95. Born as Stanley Martin Lieber in Manhattan, he is credited with co-creating
several fictional characters including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Strange, the X-
Men, Iron Man, and Thor.

Noted Indian Classical Musician Ustad Imrat Khan Passes Away

Classical music stalwart Ustad Imrat Khan, who dedicated his life to propagating the
Sitar and the surbahar worldwide, has died in the US after a brief illness. He was 83.
He belonged to the illustrious Etawa Gharana, or the Imdadkhani Gharana, named

after his grandfather Ustad Imdad Khan. He had also performed at the Cannes Film
Festival in 1970

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
M. Karunanidhi passed away in Chennai. He was the 94-year-old veteran leader of
Tamil Nadu. He started as a screenwriter in Tamil film industry and was Chief Minister
of Tamil Nadu for five-term.

Uri Avnery, a trailblazing Israeli journalist and peace activist and one of the first to
openly advocate for a Palestinian state passed away at the age of 94.
A member of Israel’s founding generation; he fought in the pre-state Irgun
underground militia. After independence, he became a publisher, Member of
Parliament, author and activist.

Ajit Wadekar passed away, He was 1st Captain of India’s ODI Cricket team

Renowned Poet Gopal Das Neeraj Passes Away

Hindi poet Gopal Das Neeraj passed away in New Delhi after a prolonged illness. He
was 94. His famous poetic works include Asawari, Lahar Pukare and Paran Geet.
He won 3 Filmfare awards and penned some of the all-time hits like Likhe Jo khat
tujhe. He was conferred with Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Bhushan in 2007.
