ETHICS AND SAFETY

In this lesson, you will learn:

Explain the interconnectedness of ethics and safety in the workplace.

Analyze the difference between legal and moral conduct.
Apply ethical tests to evaluate the morality of choices in various situations.
Evaluate the role of health and safety professionals in creating an ethical environment.

Ethics and safety are two important concepts that are often interconnected. Ethics is the study of
what is right and wrong, while safety is the prevention of harm. Both ethics and safety are essential
for creating a safe and healthy environment for employees in the workplace.

Morality refers to the values subscribed to and promoted by society. It seeks to apply reason to
determine the rules of human conduct that translate morality into everyday behavior. Moral conduct
falls within the limits determined by morality. Legal conduct and moral conduct are not the
same. If something is illegal, it is also immoral. However, just because something is legal
does not mean that it is moral. The act can be legal but also unethical. To determine if the choice
is ethical, you can apply the following tests: the day after, cover, mirror, roll reversal, and
common sense.

Health and safety professionals have a tripartite role in terms of ethics. They are responsible for
setting an ethical. For example, helping employees to identify ethical options when faced with
ethical issues also helps them to pursue and make ethical choices.

There are three approaches available to health and safety professionals when dealing with
ethical dilemmas:

The ethical function of the company is to create an ethical environment and set an ethical
example. One effective way for this is to develop a written ethical philosophy and share it with all
employees.

The three characteristics of personality that can influence an employee's moral behavior are Ego
Power, Machiavellianism and Control. People facing moral dilemmas should use ethical
determination tests or take one of these three basic approaches to work consistently.
Whistleblowing is the act of informing an external authority or media of suspected illegal or immoral
acts by an organization or person.
