Title: MECHANICS -- MEASUREMENT AND MEASURING INSTRUMENTS

AIM: TO FIND THE DENSITY OF OBJECTS

Density: (a) Regular Shape

(b) Irregular Shape
(c) Disc Object

(a) REGULAR SHAPE

APPARATUS: Rectangular block of wood, beam balance, Vernier caliper, meter rule.

PROCEDURE:

1. Use balance to find the mass of the block.

2. Measure the dimensions of the block with a caliper.
3. Find the volume of respective shape given.
4. Then determine the density of each object used

OBSERVATIONS: Mass of block m = ______g

Dimensions of block l= ______cm

w = ______cm

b = ______cm

Volume of block V=lxwxb = _______cm3

Density of regular object D = mass/volume

= _______g/cm3 = ________kg/ m3

(b) IRREGULAR SHAPED

APPARATUS: Small solid irregular shape (stone), beam balance, measuring cylinder, water

PROCEDURE: Use beam balance to find mass of solid

Record volume of cylinder half filled with water

Gently suspend the solid into the water without splashing

Record new volume of water in cm3

Determine the density of the object using relevant formula

OBSERVATION: Mass of solid m = _______ g

Volume without solid V1 = _______ cm3

Volume with solid V2 = _______ cm3

Volume of solid V = V2 – V1 = ______ cm3

Density of solid D = M/V = ______ g/cm3 = _________kg/m3

(c) DISC:

APPARATUS: Small disc (coin), Vernier caliper, micrometer screw gauge

PROCEDURE: Use beam balance to find mass of disc

Use caliper to measure width and screw gauge for thickness

Determine the density of the object using relevant formula

OBSERVATION: Mass of disc m = _____ g

Diameter of disc d1 = _____ cm

Repeat d2 = _____ cm

Avg. ( d2 + d1 ) / 2 d = _____ cm

Thickness (screw gauge) t1 = _____mm to _____cm

Repeat t2 = ____mm to ______cm

Average thickness t = ______cm

Volume of disc V = pi x diameter squared x thickness/4

V = _____ cm3

Density D = Mass/V = _____g/cm3 = ______ Kg/m3
