The best gift and the door to my future.

By: Bayron Perez

I have good memories from my childhood; memories that became useful tools to my

present and they left me unforgettable lessons. These experiences have been a path to

become who I am. My journey started the day my father gifted me an English book. I did

not know the positive impact this would have until I found myself interested with the

beauty of teaching a foreign language. The affinity and passion I have it takes me straight

to start my English learning process. I never thought that the little book would have been

an opened door where I had to enter, when I open that book I was excited but also surprised

then I started reading the book immediately.

I had never seen an English book and I wasn't used to reading. The book was small,

black and white pages, there were no pictures. There were only letters, and 3 columns:

Spanish, English, and pronunciation. At the beginning it was difficult because I had never

studied English before and every day I wanted to learn more. The cover had an eagle along

with the flag of the United States. I used to write in my notebook and I memorized every

single word and there were also, some easy phrases that I could use with my family and

friends. The little book was very useful and the first day when I took an English class, I

already knew many words because I used to study by my own. I was so interested that I

took my book everywhere.

Suddenly, I used to gather with my friendly neighbors on my house’s porch and I

used to play with them saying that I was their teacher. I had an old blackboard behind my

house where we could write with many colored chalk. During the free time I used to teach

to my friends with my English book. We enjoyed that time when we were together and we

learned some new words. I loved to make exams and I enjoyed revising them. The benefit

was not only for me but also for those who wanted to speak English while playing. Every

day my neighbors came to the edge of my house, they were waiting to start the lessons.

Somehow I motivated them that some of them are English teachers in High school.

When I grew up I loved the English language more than anything. Then my father

decided to enroll me in an academy where they offered English courses. I was there over 2

years and I was able to improve my knowledge and have a better foundation in all areas of

English. I remember they gave us a lot of handwritten homework but that helped me to

improve my writing skills and to write better every day. I developed listening skill when I

worked with CDs and I listened several songs in English, also I wrote them down to repeat

them later. From that moment I realized that I had to continue studying English to become a

very knowledgeable English teacher. Now I feel confident when I speak English with

someone else. I could say that English is my favorite foreign language.

Finally, I can say that no matter what barriers we have, a small book can make a

difference. Depends on if you are willing to make an effort and moving forward. I was

decided to keep on going. From my childhood, I discovered that I loved the English

language. Now I continue preparing myself to one day pass on that knowledge to future

students. Reading has opened a new door inside of me and it helped me to discover my

passions, and wherever my interest takes me I will find a way to share with love and joy the

knowledge for new generations. I will always share with other the power of giving a book

to someone.
