Answer Key Worksheet 4

1. Find two consecutive even numbers such that the sum of the smaller number and twice the greater number is 100.

Let: x – 1st even integer

x+2 – 2nd even integer

Solution: x + 2(x+2) = 100

x + 2x +4 = 100
3x+4 = 100
3x = 100-4
3x = 96
x=32 (1st even integer)
x+2 = 32+2 = 34 (2nd even integer)

2. The sum of three consecutive integers is -36. Find the integers.

Let: x – 1st integer
x+1 – 2nd integer
x+2 – 3rd integer
Solution: x+(x+1)+(x+2) = -36
3x + 3 = -36
3x = -36-3
3x = -39
x = - 13 (1st integer)
x+1= -13+1 = -12 (2nd integer)
x+2= -13+2 = -11 (3rd integer)

3. Three sisters have ages that are consecutive odd integers. Find the ages if the sum of the age of the youngest and three times the age of
the oldest is five less than five times the middle sister’s age.

Let: x – age of the youngest

x+2 – age of the middle
x+ 4 – age of the eldest

Solution: x+ 3(x+4) = 5(x+2) – 5

x+3x+12 = 5x+10-5
12-10+5 = 5x-x-3x
7 = x (age of the youngest)
x+2 = 7+2 = 9 (age of the middle)
x+4 = 7+4 = 11(age of the eldest)

4. Find three consecutive even integers such that the sum of twice the first and three times the third is fourteen more than four times the
second.

Let: x – 1st even integer

x+2 – 2nd even integer
x+4 – 3rd even integer
Solution: 2x + 3(x+4) = 4(x+2) +14
2x + 3x+12 = 4x+8+14
5x-4x = 8+14-12
x = 10 (1st even integer)
x+2= 10+2 = 12 (2nd integer)
x+4= 10+4 = 14 (3rd integer)

5. Find two consecutive odd integers such that 4 times the larger is 29 more than 3 times the smaller.

Let: x – 1st odd integer

x+2 – 2nd odd integer
Solution: 4(x+2) = 3x + 29
4x+8 = 3x+29
4x-3x = 29-8
x = 21(1st odd integer)
x+2 = 21+2 = 23 (2nd odd integer)

6. Find four consecutive odd integers such that the sum of the second and third is 88.
Let: x – 1st odd integer
x+2 – 2nd odd integer
x+4- 3rd odd integer
x+6 – 4th odd integer
Solution: (x+2)+(x+4) = 88
2x+6 = 88
2x = 88-6
2x= 82
x=41(1st odd integer)
x+2 = 41+2 = 43 (2nd odd integer)
x+4 = 41+4 = 45 (3rd odd integer)
x+6 = 41+6 = 47 (4th odd integer)

7. Find four consecutive even integers such that twice the sum of the second and third is 34 more than 3 times the first.
Let: x – 1st even integer
x+2 – 2nd even integer
x+4- 3rd even integer
x+6 – 4th even integer

Solution: 2[(x+2)+(x+4)] = 3x+34

2(2x+6) = 3x+34
4x+12 = 3x+34
4x-3x = 34-12
x = 22 (1st even integer)
x+2 = 22+2 = 24 (2nd even integer)
x+4 = 22+4 = 26 (3rd even integer)
x+6 = 22+6 = 28 (4th even integer)
