Four marks Questions:

1.What similes does Romeo use to convey Juliet's beauty and to

what effect?

In the verse by Romeo from the play Romeo and Juliet, written by
William Shakespeare, Juliet’s beauty has been described by using
various similes. Romeo attends the Capulet party in disguise to meet
Rosaline. But he sees Juliet on the dance floor and is fascinated by
her. The major similes used are: "…rich jewel on Ethiope’s ear." and
"snowy dove”. Her beauty is also brighter than the torches, divine
and rare. All these similes are used to highlight the beauty of Juliet
and Romeo's fascination for her. Romeo has fallen in love with Juliet
and she is shining like a jewel and light at night, her glow is such that
even the lights/torches have to learn from her as to how to shine
brightly. She also looks like a white dove among the crows, In this
simile Juliet outshines her companions. So, Romeo says that she is
“too rich” and “earth too dear”, which suggest that she is a divine
being like an angel and too good for this meagre earth. Romeo had
never seen such a beauty till that night and he glorifies her charm.
The similes bring out rare comparisons like jewel on a black
background and dove among black crows.

2. How according to Juliet, would Romeo be immortalised to the

world?

The play Romeo and Juliet is written by William Shakespeare, In the

second monologue, Juliet is waiting for night to come. Night
represents light for her because the light of her life is Romeo and he
comes at night like daylight. Without Romeo her life is dark and
unhappy. He is like a white snow on ravens back. White snow

suggests Romeo’s charm and pure love. The black bird raven is an
imagery for night. Juliet describes the night as loving, gentle and
black browed. Night is personified and is shown in a positive light
because Juliet wants night to get her Romeo. Darkness is not
something that she is scared of because her light Romeo comes with
it. Juliet says that when she dies Romeo should be cut out into little
stars. Thus, the group of stars/constellation formed by Romeo would
make the night sky so beautiful that the world will fall in love with
night. Stars are said to be immortal thus if Romeo becomes a star he
will be immortalised. Juliet wants her love Romeo to live forever like
stars. Finally, when the night sky becomes beautiful and fascinating,
the world will forget the garish sun and worship the nightlike Juliet.

3. Comment on the imagery of "night- day, black-white" in the

poem what purpose do they serve in highlighting the intensity of
love?

The imagery of "night- day, black-white “has been used in the verse
by Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. The images
used to denote night- day, black-white are Jewel on Eithope's ear,
snowy dove among crows, new snow on raven's back, stars at night,
black browed night and Romeo as day in night. These images
highlight the intensity of love, where the young lovers feel
passionately for each other. On the one hand Romeo is so much in
love with Juliet that he can see only her beauty which is brighter and
white. Rest of the world seems dull or like crows. She stands out with
her beauty and charm that has captivated Romeo. On the other hand
Juliet sees Romeo as light in darkness he such a light that the world
would fall in love with him and forget even the sun. He has made her
fall in love with night. She feels that Romeo is day at night so the
differences between the two are blurred for her.

Thus, the imagery expresses their passionate feelings for one
another.
