Definition of nursing research
Systematic collection and analysis of data to
describe or explain new facts or relationship
for the purpose of prediction and explanation
 Goals of nursing research

 Identification and description of phenomena such as

patient stress and coping, pain management and
health beliefs.
 Prediction and estimate the probability of specific
outcome in a given situation
 Exploration of the nature of phenomena and the
manner of it is manifested and factors related to it.
 Explanation of the underpinning of the phenomena
and explain its relationship to other phenomena.
 Efficiency and effectiveness of nursing care
 Potential for improving quality of nursing care
 Research purposes related to evidence
based practice :

1- Treatment , therapy or intervention

2-Diagnosis and assessment
3-Prognosis
4-Prevention of harm
 Value of nursing research
 Providing high-quality up-to-date care to clients.

 Incorporate of nursing research knowledge into

daily practice protocols.
 Increasing consumer expectations.

 Reaching for more-cost effective nursing

strategies.
 The process for answering the questions that
surface in daily nursing practice
 Types of research
1- General classification
 Basic research (pure research): is concerned
with generating new knowledge.

 Applied research is concerned with using

knowledge to solve immediate problems
2- According to levels of
investigation
 Exploratory research : allow one to study
variables pertinent to specific situation
 Descriptive research: description of
phenomena in real life situation, provide
accurate account of characteristics of
individuals and groups. Uses questionnaires,
surveys, interviews or observations to collect
data
 3- According to time element
Retrospective Prospective

- Examines data already - Examines data being

collected in the past. collected in the present
- Ex: Review of medical - Ex: Study describing social
records to examine previous support and coping
history in of cholesterol mechanisms of women with
levels in s/p MI patients. ovarian cancer.
Cross-Sectional Longitudinal

- Collects data at one - Studies examines

point in time. variables of interest
- What exists today? over a period of time
- Advantages –ability to
collect data on the
same individual over
time.
4-According to research design
 Experimental versus non-experimental
Experimental Non-experimental
- Researcher manipulates or - Describes or looks at
controls variable(s) and relationships(s) or correlation
observes effect in other between variables.
variable(s) - Variables are not manipulated
- Evaluates cause and effect by the researcher
relationship - Ex: Correlation between
- Ex: Does a pre-op intervention breast cancer and smoking.
program increase self efficacy of
self care measures post-op?
3- Correlation Research
- Relationships between and among variables.
Collection of data on at least 2 variables for the
same group of individuals.
- Calculator-the correlation between the
measurers.
- Highest number of research studies in nursing
are classified as description correlation design.
Sources of knowledge for nursing
1- Nursing traditions : journal,
observation, books
2- Intuition
 Intuition is a form of knowing and
behaving not apparently based on
rational reasoning. “Use sense to know
what to do”.
3- Experience and trial & error.
4- logical reasoning
 It is a method of knowing combines
experience, our intellectual faculties and
formed systems of thought.
 Inductive reasoning, is the process of developing
generalization from specific observed:-
 Deductive reasoning, is the process of developing
specific prediction from general principle.
The Role of Nurses in research 
1-Principal investigator
2-Member of a research team
3- Member of a research team
4- Evaluator of research findings
5- User of research findings
6- Patient/client advocate during studies
