Nature of Self and Self-Awareness


Self-Awareness

 knowing your motivation, preferences, personality and


understanding how these factors influence ur judgements, decisions and interactions wt other people

 It comprises the feelings and thoughts, interests, strengths and


limitations, values, skills, goals, abilities, leadership orientation and
preferred communication style

 The starting point for effectiveness at work

The benefits of self-awareness are:

• Understanding yourself in relation to others.


• Developing and implementing a sound self-improvement program.
• Setting appropriate life and career goals.
• Developing relationship with others.
• Understanding the value of diversity.
• Managing others effectively.
• Increasing productivity.
• Increasing your ability to contribute to organizations, your community
and family.
How to gain self-awareness?
• Recognizing our strengths, weaknesses, biases, attitudes, values and
perceptions

• Analyzing our own experiences

• Looking at ourselves through the eyes of others

• Self-disclosure

• Acquiring diverse experiences

• Increasing our emotional intelligence


will require a person to reflect on the negative impact that may
have influenced the behavors, attitudes, thoughts. or interaction
Self-analysis
• Examination of oneself after experiencing a particular
situation or event.

Self-discovery
• Process of forming an accurate, realistic view of
yourself. necessary to take charge of your future
Six (6) components of the Self-discovery process:

a. Characteristics your qualities

b. Interest what you enjoy what u are doing

c. Aptitudes what or where u good at

d. Values things important to u

e. Needs what do u need to have a satisfying life

Behavior

• the way we carry ourselves – the way in which we act.


• Influenced by our feelings, judgements, beliefs, motivations, needs,
experiences and opinion of others.

Four (4) components of Behavior:


intrinsict (behavior is motivated by internal desire to so something for its own sake; ex. personal enjoyment of fun act or desire to
learn skill bc u are eager to learn that skill)
1. Motivation – what makes you act in order to gain satisfaction
extrinsict (motivated by an external factor pushing u to do something in hopes of earning a reward or avoiding a less than positive
outcome; ex. reading book to prepare for test and get high grade; exercise to lose weight; studying hard to earn medal/honor)
2. Modes of thinking – the way your brain process the information it
receives and make judgement
through reflective thinking and outloud talking
how u take in annd made sense info and made u understand how u understand ur decisions
3.howModes of acting – the course of action that you apply in a given situation
u react wt respect to stimuli, events, news, people, thoughts, feelings
knowing it may help u choose alternatives when situations arise
4. Modes of interacting – the way you communicate and share ideas,
opinions and feelings with others what are u comfy wt

• Principle or belief that a person prizes and publicly affirms with


conviction, acts on consistently and chooses from among the alternatives.

Three (3) categories of Values Formation


a person is accountable for choices made
 Choosing – values must be chosen freely there should be alternatives

 Prizing – a value that has been chosen should be prized and


cherishedshould be affirmed and person should admit it publicly

 Acting – values should be reflected by our actions

Classifications of Values:

• Personal Values – self- respect, health, privacy, peace of mind, independence


• Family Values – close family ties, family happiness ideas of how u want to live ur family life

talents, motives, values, attitudes that willl provide stability for ur chosen workplace
• Work Values – competence in the workplace, industry, resourcefulness

• Social and Humanitarian Values – service to others, patriotism and
nationalism
• Cultural Values – utangnaloob, pakikisama, giving high regard to authorities
values and ideas that exist in a certain community

Roots of Filipino Character
The strengths and weaknesses of Filipino character was influenced
by the following factors as identifies by Shahani (1993) which
comprised:

1. Family and home environment


2. Social environment characterized by feudal structure with great gaps bet rich and poor majorities

cant be separated
3. Culture and language ph has very rich cultural struction, beliefs
we are product of our colonial history
4. History results to lack of nationalism and lack of mentality

5. Educational system use of english language in educational system


6. Religion
7. Economic environment our difficulties drives us to take risks to survive

8. Political environment ph - centralization of power

9. Mass media primary means of communication to reach vast majority of gen public

10. Leadership and role model filo look at to their leaders as role models
Filipino Characters:
1. Pakikisama to acquire wt everybody

2. ‘Bahala na’ attitude leaving the matters as they are bc nature will take over

3. Bayanihan or Team spirit assissting one another


4. ‘Utang na Loob’ or Reciprocity portrays true indivaduality based on response to others

5. ‘Bukas loob na pagtanggap’ or Hospitality welcoming attitude , offering the the best

6. ‘Gulong ng palad’ ups and downs of life

7. ‘Tsamba’ undeserved success brought by fortune

8. ‘Tadhana’ decried by destiny


9. ‘Swerte’ or ‘Buenas’ good fortune
10.Faith and religiosity faith in God and having high regard to religious institutions and doctrines

Nationalism

• Means love, care for, preservation and patronage of one’s native land and
everything in it – the country of birth of a national, whether it be Filipino or
otherwise attitude of mind that values and places welface of country over all of the others

Patriotism

• The willingness and determination to lay down one’s life for the fatherland – the
constant resolve to sacrifice one’s life and limb for the preservation of the State.
total realization of that love for the country

to be patriotic is to be nationalistic

3. Pagkamaka – Bayan – Unity, equality, respect for law and government,


patriotism, promotion of the Common Good.

4. Pagkamaka- kalikasan– concern for the environment.
