Brief Introduction of the Awarding Institution & Department (approx. 500 words)

Japanese Language Unit administratively comes under the Department of Modern Languages,
Faculty of Humanities of the University of Kelaniya. The Department of Modern Languages is
one of the oldest departments in the University of Kelaniya and is the only dedicated department
of study for modern foreign languages as main subjects for the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of
Arts in Honors Degree programs. It is also a distinguished as a center of excellence in foreign
language studies in Sri Lanka since its establishment in 1970.
Seven foreign languages are taught at the department of Modern Languages, including Japanese
language. There are more than 1000 students in choosing foreign languages for their B.A. and
B.A. Honours degrees in the University.
Other than the degree programs, department of Modern Languages serve to all the internal
students with foreign language teaching. Any internal student in the University can choose
foreign languages offered by the department of Modern Languages as an Auxiliary subject.
Addition to that external student can learn foreign languages offered by the Department of
Modern Languages as well.
Department of Modern Languages is the only department dedicated to teaching a variety of
foreign languages in Sri Lanka.

Introduction of the Programme


Japanese language was first introduced in 1977 and the Japanese unit is one of the most active
and dedicated units in the department. Japanese language was introduced as one of the main
disciplines for the 3-year B.A degree program in 1980. In 2014, Japanese Language was
introduced as a 4year B.A. Honours Degree program and it was especially designed to meet the
needs of those students wish to pursue a career in Japanese related institutions, academia and the
corporate sector in a global era.
Currently going beyond the traditional aspects of knowledge impartment which aim at
developing competency in the four language skills; reading, listening, speaking and writing,
culture, society, literature and the arts, this course is designed with a firm base on learning,
professional skills (didactics, tourism and management, soft skill development, translation and
interpretation, business Japanese, IT), intercultural communication, research and other language
related issues.
A considerable number of students show an interest to choose Japanese as their major subject
nowadays. Accordingly, annually around 50 students graduate from the University of Kelaniya
with a degree in Japanese language.

B.A. Honors in Japanese Language Studies program is designed to meet the needs of those
students wishing to pursue a career in Japanese related institutions, academia and the corporate
sector in this global era. This program has evolved as a specific discipline, based on scientific
research in Japanese language learning, acquisition, translation, culture and professional and IT
skills.
Graduates become professionals equipped with knowledge and skills, value human social norms
and ethics, perform analytically, demonstrate leadership qualities, and work creatively and
professionally with innovative ideas.

At the end of B.A. Honors Degree in Japanese Language Studies program students will be able to

PLO 1 demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of language structure,


registers as appropriate, varieties and the linguistic principles required to analyze
Japanese language.

PLO 2 to demonstrate a sound knowledge, awareness and understanding of Japanese


culture, cultural values, norms, ethics and society and the similarities and
dissimilarities of Japanese culture and society in comparison with their own.

PLO 3 to use Japanese language creatively and precisely for a range of purposes and
audiences and present material in Japanese in written and oral forms in a clear and
effective manner.

PLO 4 to engage in effective communication, presentation and interaction flexibly with


others as part of a team in a relevant professional environment while demonstrating
intercultural competence.

PLO 5 to make judgements by thinking critically considering evidence and arguments and

organize and present ideas within the framework of a structured and reasoned
argument and use the language source materials appropriately

PLO 6 to utilize digital literacy, including using electronic sources of information and media

in Japanese and use Japanese language in professional purposes

PLO 7 to take leadership and work with Japanese nationals in the professional
environment with responsibility, adaptability and accountability while
respecting cultural diversity.

The main objective of the course unit is to provide an opportunity for the students to identify
the society and the responsibility and to serve the society.
7 Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
At the completion of this course unit the student will be able to
1: Nurturing community-oriented thinking pattern and emphasize cooperate social responsibility in
day-to-day social life as a member of the society.

2: Conceptualize the characteristics and meaning of ‘Community’ while understanding community


dynamics in their life course.

3: Improve students’ engagement with one of selected community or part of community among
different communities in their local, regional, or at the national levels and develop the concept of
volunteerism.

4: Enhance attitudes towards social harmony by engage with different social clusters, communities,
ethnic groups, religious groups, marginalized communities, etc.

5: Develop community-oriented thinking pattern among various student groups within the faculties
and the university, conceptualize, articulate and propose possible remedial actions to improve the
targeted community livelihood or living standards.

Content
1. From this course unit, it is essential to establish links by the Internship Coordinating
Unit in order to provide internship opportunities for the final year undergraduates. The
internship period 1 academic year covering 400 working hours. It should be completed
the compulsory workshop series conducted by Internship and Skills Development Unit
in the previous semester for getting basic knowledge and occupational experience for
the internship.
2. Under this course unit students are required to work minimum 2 days a week at the
assigned institution. On the other days, students should attend lectures/ tutorials in the
University.
3. All the relevant criteria of internship program is depended on the Internship Policy
Framework of the Internship and Skills Development Unit.
4. The following points should be completed from the internship program.
Self-preparation for selecting suitable organization and fulfilling initial
requirement for getting acceptance to suitable organization for internship.
 Developing professional soft skills related to different industrial organizations.
 Devloping skills and attitudes to get adapted to different organization cultures.
 Relate academic knowledge into real life application with the supervision of
supervisors in the relevant organizations.
 Applying skills to enhance the professional network and public relations with the
